as long as the ignition is on, it counts time, then as you move, it logs distance. Divide distance by the time, and it gives average speed.
Of course if you are stopped at a light it will impact your average speed. But if you pull over on a long trip, and stop for fuel, or food, the lost time does not impact the average.
I dont see what is dumb about it. Average is average, total distance/total time.

Thanks. That explains it. I had the car at the dealer for several days because they were fixing an electrical problem with the seat. When I got the car back, I noticed that my "Average Speed" had dropped from about 20mph (which is normal for in-town) to 14mph. They must have had the ignition on while they were working on the car.
