Can anyone help with this noise??
Hello,
Newbie here. First post...
Recently bought a beautiful 2007 2.5 X Type Auto but it's developed this whirring noise...
Can anyone help identify what it might be? The car is still under a short warranty but I'd love to have some idea before I go back to the seller!!
Any thoughts VERY gratefully received
Cheers

Instead of using quick post button try "go advanced" button. It is also possible since you are a new member it might take a few days before you can add attachments to posts. Slows down the spammers I guess.
I have had a chance to listen to your recordings and we can now start tracking down the source of the noise.
It may sound silly but the first things I need you to check is the power steering reservoir full? and is the coolant tank full?
I assume they will be full, so moving on,
Remove the drive belt from the water pump at the rear of the engine. Check the pump, drive and tensioner pulley by rotating by hand and check for play or rough noises. Start the engine and check for the noise. Is It the same? Did it go away?
Next on the list is removal of the engine accessory serpentine drive belt. Once the belt is off start the engine noise still there Yes?, No?. My guess is that it probably is gone now. So we need to see which of the accessories is causing the noise. You will need to remove the right side wheel and inner wheel arch liner so you have access to each of the pulleys for the accessories. Start examining the accessory drives as follows:
1. Exam the crankshaft drive pulley. Does there appear to be any damage to it? Gripping it by the sides can you rock it back and forth?
2. A/C compressor rotate the pulley. Does it feel smooth while rotating?
3. Power steering pulley. Perform same check.
4. Alternator pulley. Again same inspection.
5. Last check the idler pulley by rotating and check for smoothness.
I am pretty confident that the inspections will reveal the source of your engine noise.
