Winding Noise
I recently purchased a 2004 3.0 X-type, love the car and have had relatively few problems. However, a winding down noise comes from behind the driver's side dash when slowing down/stopping or if I rev the engine at relatively low (<10mph) speeds. The winding down noise stops within a second after coming to a stop. It seems that I notice it more when the vehicle isn't completely warmed up. I don't notice any performance issues but I want to be sure this isn't something larger manifesting itself in this noise.
Please note, this noise is NOT the air sampling from under the steering column.
I regularly read through this forum and have found some great information here. Please let me know if anyone knows what this might be.

Could be some noisy gearing between the stepper motor and the speedo or tacho needles. That was common in the early X Type years and quite a few instrument panels were changed under warranty by Jaguar.
