Default Catalytic Converter - which one ?

-engine light came on
-shop diagnosed as REAR cat failure
-quote :$1600 + 6 hrs labour !! ?? ouch
-on line part suppliers have excellent prices, however they indicate passenger side or driver side..left side or right side... no reference to the front or rear. Which one should I order ?
- does it really take 6 hours to R & I ?
There are 2 excellent PDF file in the stickies for the procedure, however it is for a 2004 model. Is it different from my 2003 2.5 litre?
-front & rear location makes more sense to me.
I am guessing that front = left and rear = right ?

The end of the engine that has the Alternator & A/C Compressor is the front, so if you twisted the engine to a north/south relationship the cat near the radiator is your left side, cat near the firewall is right, the front you can pull quite easily (relative term since it's a transvers engine) the right side/rear is the bear. by the book, raise car, drop engine cradle to allow enough room to pull cat down through... my mechanic told me 6 hours too... All North American cars are configured the same, displacement didn't affect anything on the outside for the entire production run...

we confirmed mine was a bad rear cat by pulling the upper O2 sensor and going for a drive around the neighborhood while it was still plugged in... she was able to hold 5,000 rpm (in second). because we'd removed the source of backpressure we removed the source of misfire... good peace of mind before spending big money

I'm not sure what you mean. You pulled the 02 sensor but then you said you drove with it plugged in. explain please
btw my car runs perfect. no backfire, no hesitation, great gas mileage
