Changing oil pressure switch without removing A/C compressor?
I recently had an episode where my oil pressure light flickered, then stayed on while at idle RPMs, then went off upon acceleration and came back on again at idle as I was getting ready to pull into my job.
On my lunch break it did not come back on, nor did it while I was driving home. There were no unusual sounds from the engine at any point (even when the light was on), the oil level was fine, and the oil was in good condition, so from the limited amount of information I can find on the subject, it sounds like it might be the oil pressure switch/sensor.
I was pleasantly surprised when it was only $9 at my local auto parts store, and happy about what I thought would be a simple job, but my pleasure has faded now that I removed the oil filter and I can see where the sensor is.
I could not find any videos of anyone doing the job, and the factory service manual does not call for removing any parts besides the oil filter to access it. However, in the few posts I can find on various forums, the brief descriptions of the process range from “a 10 minute job” to “a pain to get to with not much room to work” to “removed the A/C compressor” and even all the way to “dropped and removed the radiator”.
Has anyone here changed the oil pressure sensor on a 3.0 and if so, do you have any tips?
The red arrow is pointing to the connector, which is behind (engine side of) the alternator (noted by the yellow arrow) and above the A/C compressor. The green arrow points to the oil filter adapter.
I couldn’t figure out how to update my signature, as the instructions don’t match the options I see, so I have a 2005 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 AWD LHD.
The issue I posted about above hasn’t yet been resolved, so in the midst of my oil change, I decided to have another go at it.
Since one of the few suggestions I found online was to remove the belt and loosen the bolts of the A/C compressor, I removed the lower plastic shield to have a better view of all four of the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
Unfortunately, the top left bolt (as you are facing the car) is nearly impossible to get to without removing the A/C hoses, before which the refrigerant would have to be evacuated and recovered.
I’ve looked at all relevant posts that I could find in this subforum, and those which say how they went about changing the switch mostly seem to mention removing the A/C compressor. I just want to make sure there’s nothing I’m missing before I give up for now and put everything back together and take it to a shop to recover the refrigerant for me.
