Default Coolant leaking from bolts? I have photos...

Hi,

I'm having problems trying to determine where the coolant leak is coming from in my 04 X Type 3.0.

From below vehicle (2 bolts in the bottom center of photo):

From above looking under the <strike>timing</strike> drive belt:

Any other suggestions on where this might be leaking from? If it is the bolts, what should I be replacing to stop the leak?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I think you need a new waterpump (typical) it's leaking out of the waterpump and dripping down onto those transmission cooler lines..That is not a timing belt, it is a drive belt for the waterpump.

PS..Never use stop leak of any kind, unless you are stranded in the desert and it's only way to get you home or to a camel..

Thanks, I was feeling around the water pump above those bolts and there wasn't a whole lot of fluid but I will check again.

If I end up replacing the water pump I'm thinking I should replace the drive belt too since I think its the original belt (I'm just under 100,000 miles right now). I'm having trouble searching for the part though. Drive belt just seems to yield results for the serpentine belt. Is there another name I should be using to search for this part?

The water pump is the only thing it can be and they all start LEAKING SOONER OR LATER...The drive belt is easy to find and should also be replaced with the water pump. 2004 Jaguar X-Type Multi-Rib Belt Accessory Drive Belt Water Pump (Gates)

The serpentine belt is on the other side of the engine...The water pump is driven off of the output shaft from the front camshaft via this small belt.

When in doubt, always call a dealer's parts for a part number

Those bolts you keep referring to are banjo fittings and transmission fluid flows through them to the radiator for cooling.

arskemp: The water pump belt for our 2.5L and 3.0L X-Types is Gates belt # K030231. They're only ~$10 and can be installed with your bare hands in just a couple minutes, no tools required. Well worth the minimal cost & effort to avoid an overheated engine if the old belt fails.

Gates specifies belt K030231 for 3.0L engines, but it fits 2.5L's as well.

Um, go back and re-read this thread..he needs a new water pump drive belt..not the serpentine belt.

Yes, the confusion is understandable, because Gates belt K030231 is unfortunately called a "serpentine" belt. But on our X-Types it's the water pump belt: only ~12 inches long (~23.75 inch circumference) and ~1/2 inch wide (0.42 inches). For this small water pump belt, the tensioner spring is 'soft' enough to move it with your bare hand when replacing the belt.

The actual serpentine belt on the front of our X-Type engines is much longer and wider: ~48 inches long (~97 inch circumference) and 0.8 inches wide. The tensioner for this 'beefy' serpentine belt is so stiff that a 3/8" breaker bar and some leverage is needed to replace the belt.

I was second guessing myself, so continued searching and confirmed on RockAuto.com the two types of belts for our X-Types: the short water pump belt including Gates K030231, and the 97 inch long serpentine belts. Hope this helps clear up any questions. Pls let me know if I missed something.

Last year I replaced both belts with a Gates K030231 for the water pump and a Goodyear 4060970 for the serpentine belt. Finding the e-mail receipts was easy, but both are called 'serpentine' belts, so I had to look up the length & width of each belt to 'remind' myself which one is the water pump belt vs. the 'real' serpentine belt.

Hopefully this helps others figure it out a little quicker.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I've gotten the parts I need ordered and will be installing them as soon as they arrive later this week. I'll keep everyone posted on how it goes.

Update:

I replaced the water pump and belt on Thursday. Drove it a bit Friday and Saturday it seems to be completely fixed. No leaks and it might even be slightly quieter with the new belt on.
