"drum-like" drone and sputtering sound when coming to a stop. Feels like ABS...
Hi,
My parents have a 2002 Jaguar X-type and there's been a strange behavior with the brakes that happens pretty consistently. When slowly coming to a stop, pretty much right before the car actually stops, we hear a "thummmmmmm" sound and feel a bump on the brake pedal. Then there is a "sputtering" sound with an ABS-like feeling on the brake pedal. The braking distance does increase by a foot or 2 from where you believed the car should have stopped. There is no check engine light or any codes triggered by this issue. We recently replaced the air breather hose (had a nice 4 inch cut) but it did not seem to fix the issue.
The brakes work perfectly, the brake "feel" at any speed is fine and there is no vibration when driving. Any tips on what else I can check? Thanks in advance!
On a side note, this website has helped me save hundreds of dollars (recently replaced air breather and water pump). My parents replaced the water pump in less than 30 minutes...including 15 minutes trying to get the battery box out. A mechanic wanted $200 for the pump and 3 hours installation, plus another $300 if he has to remove the "water pump housing". A big thank you for this.
