Default Engine/clutch replacement

Pretty soon here my beloved X-Type will be going in for a engine replacement. What I'm looking for from you all is some insight on the pricing that has been presented to me.

It's looking like it's going to run me in the ballpark of $5000-$5500. Does it seem like a decent price for a used engine, new clutch assembly and labor?

The other thing I was wondering is if anyone knew if the clutch assembly was used in any Ford branded cars as I get a employer discount on Ford parts.

Hi jagman,
Good luck on your mission, the guys here will be wondering what engine you are looking to try out?
If you detail your engine/spec/year they will be keen to help.

Regards, Stu

It's a 2002 3.0 manual Sport, completely slipped my mind to include that.

I cannot answer regarding the clutch as a Ford part, but you should be aware that Jaguar redesigned the clutch assembly for 2004 - and it is FAR smoother, especially in the 1>2 shift, with much lighter pedal action. The car is completely transformed with this new clutch - and I mean completely. The shift becomes a finger tip operation. The redesigned clutch is part # C2S 33393. You will not believe the difference.

VERY good to know. Even after years of owning my X-Type there were times I'm sure I looked like I had just learned to drive a manual. (I'd been driving manuals for >10yrs)

~90,000 miles

I'm pretty sure I spun a bearing. Was driving home from work and it started making a horrendous metal on metal noise.

Sorry to hear that.
have you had a mechanic look at it for you give you an idea what is wrong.
How handy are you? if you have to pull the engine to replace it would it not be cheaper to refurbish the one you have? At least you know the history of your Engine.
where are you ?
I have seen some Engines on Ebay starting around $700 depending where you are also note the S type 3.0 is the same engine we have in our x-types call your local scrap yards see what they have.
Also I have used rockauto.com for a lot of my parts they have a clutch kit for $211 part #19038

That's kind of steep to me, a good used engine with low miles should only run around $1k or less and I think most independent garages would only charge you $1500-$2000 for everything else including labor and a warranty.

You may want to shop around as $5k would get you a real nice low mileage 2002/2003 X type these days.
