Default extended warranty

Just bought a 2003 X-Type, 3.0, manual, 50K miles, in March and am shopping for an extended warranty. I got a quote for a 3-year, 36,000 mile warranty from Ford ESP, Premium Care for $2,490 (from a dealer, not over the internet). Is it worth it to buy this warranty? Anyone have any experience with Ford ESP plans?

My Jaguar Select warranty is due to expire in September and my dealer offered me the Jaguar Extra Mile plan. It is ~$2200 for 24 months, only covers "lubricated" parts, and has a $100 deductible. It is a Jaguar plan that pays the dealer directly.

However, since I just had my transfer case replaced and there doesn't seem to be any other extreme problems with the X-Type, as far 'lubricated" parts are concerned (or have I missed something... ;-), I'm not sure that I am interested in signing up for that plan. What you quote might be more worthwhile, though.

Question: what does the Ford plan cover? Is it transferable to any Ford dealer or would it cover things if you took it to a Jaguar dealer? Does it pay the dealer directly or reimburse you? What is the deductible?

I understand that COSTCO sells decent extended warranties for reasonable prices, and you get some peace of mind knowing COSTCO sells it...

I am thinking about it for when the warranty on my 2008 XK runs out next year...

Default thanks

pab - Thanks - the Ford plan does cover repairs at the Jag dealer or any certified mechanic. Ford plan pays them directly after I pay $100 deductible. It covers almost everything - is what they call an "exclusionary warranty" which is the most comprehensive - like a bumper to bumper. You may want to shop around before Sept as signing up while your car is under mfg warranty is MUCH cheaper than after. Walk into any Ford dealer and ask about their plan. Price is negotiable just like their cars are.

Stillwaters - thanks - I will check out Costco too before I buy...

Further data point, I talked with my dealer and learned that when a car covered by a third-party warranty (even from Ford) the dealer will first diagnose the problem and then contact the warranty company to determine coverage. If the warranty pays the entire amount, fair enough. If the warranty company only pays a portion then the car's owner will be responsible for the difference.

I guess that's the difference with a factory warranty where the customer owes nothing after a covered repair is complete.

Pulled the trigger over the weekend and purchased a Ford Premium extended warranty. My car is an '05 with 63k miles. I shopped around and got prices from $3700 to $3200 for the 3yr/36k mile plan. I refused the car rental coverage and paid for the $50.00 deductible. It ended up costing me $3245.00 for the coverage.

It has cash value and I can surrender it and get a pro-rated refund. It can also be transferred to a new owner for $75.00.

I consider this to be like life insurance policy. I don't plan on exercising it I'm just comfortable that I have the coverage.
