RE: Extended warranty Question?
Everyone has their opinions on them. I say they are crap. A lot of consumer reports say they are crap. The smaller maintenance items such as 02 sensors, catalytic converters, glass, cosmetic, electrical, etc...... are NOT covered by those "bumper to bumper" extended warranties. They are contradictory of themselves by listing large items they cover and giving a list double the size of what they do NOT cover which can be tied into the larger things to do cover. Catch 22.
There is always a deductible involved that the dealer sets which is not told to you when you buy the warranty. For instance under an extended warranty with a Mercedes you can have a bad 02 sensor which they say they cover, but when you go for service there is a $100 deductible on the $140 sensor. Most extended warranties will run you around $2000 when you look at what you pay all in all by the length of the term, yet unless the transmission falls completely out of the car, nothing else you have issues with is covered! (sensors on the tranny, maintenance, certain parts of the tranny that are common failures found in the loophole areas of the warranty).
Bottom line is that they are written to look like a bargain, but they are worthless with the deductibles involved and the fine print. Worst case scenario - you drop a transmission and it costs you $1800 to fix, if you add in all the parts and deductible that the warranty DID NOT pay for when it went in for the rebuild, you'll find a lot more money in your pocket without the warranty.

RE: Extended warranty Question?
I second that. Aftermarket warranties can be a real big rip. It takes a lot of research. Jag Select Edition on, on the other hand is a really good warranty. Sometimes it takes a phone call to Jag CRC to get something covered, but it's worth it. I bought my 02 X Sport with 35K miles on it in Sept. 2005. She's got 65K miles on her now. It has been in the shop 10 times for non-service related issues. I've had 2 RF wheel bearings, 2 driver's seat tracks, Bank 2 Cat, steering rack seals, 2 coil packs, brake booster, under hood pad, driver's door seal, shift boot, transfer case, defrost vents, center driveshaft, right Fog Light wiring harness, AC compressor, oil pan seal, and 2 fuel injector flushes all replaced or performed free under Select Edition warranty. I also recieved free services until 40K miles and a free 50K mile oil change.
Add all that up and tell me Select Edition isn't worth it. I love the car, but I couldn't have ever owned it without a warranty, even being a professional tech.

RE: Extended warranty Question?
If you have been having to take your car into the shop a lot of times then I would recommend getting a warranty. If you have only had a few problems then I would say that it's best tohold on tothat $2000-$6000 that you would spend on an extended warranty. You can be earning interest on your money while you wait for something major to break.

RE: Extended warranty Question?
I'd buy the jag select I would have back when I bought my jag but was 53k miles and 3k over the limit...a remanufactured tranny on ebay for these cars costs 1800+dollars and others were 2200 and more. That doesn't include labor...to me the 2k or less you'd spend on a jag warranty is by far worth it! Especially when it covers almost everything...squeak in the dash go get it fixed!

RE: Extended warranty Question?
do you think a cracked wood panel (on the passenger side) is covered (6yr/100,000mi warranty)? or is it only mechanical/electrical parts that fail due to wear?
i'm not sure how it happened, but i noticed a couple days ago that there was a long crack in the wood extending from one side to another. a result of the cold temperature?
