Aargh... me thinks my X-Type truly is a fair weather friend... it's been around 0 here in Wisconsin lately and my car is acting like it...
1. it cranks slow, but that is to be expected in this weather
2. the slight interior fog problem I was dealing with has not turned into interior FROST for crying out loud... I can't see a damn thing through the side windows. New cabin filter, new air conditioning condenser, even ripped out the glove box to fix the recirc flap!
3. Even though my baby has now a new transmission, it whines in this cold weather.
4. Even though it's 0 or below outside, the display in the car shows temps varying from in the 30's all the way up to the 70's and it fluctuates as I drive... when idling the temp on the display drops, when driving it keeps going up!

I can't be the only one with this problem, right?

2 Did you fix the recirc door so that it is open to outside air?

4 is the front of the car covered in ice? the outside temperature sensor is right at the front, lower grill, and if it gets iced over, it will read more of the engine compartment temperature than outside. I drove through a wet snow storm that turned to a blizzard on the freeway and by the time I got home with two inches of ice on the front of the car, the outside temperature read a balmy 73F.

 

My car seems to despise driving in the cold weather at least before warming up. I never had a car that needed to be "warmed up" before driven, but I have heard about the phenomenon. Even my 30+ year old, '76 Caddy didn't need to be warmed up, it just went when told. But while my X cranks up great, it hesitates on first acceleration and gurgles through the first 3 shifts after each stop for the first 5-7 minutes of driving in the morning. Doesn't really bother me, just took some getting used to.

 

The only source of interior moisture comes from the driver/passengers.... If your recirc door is OPEN, and fresh air is entering, you need to look at your own habbits.

make sure you knock the snow off your feet before getting in the car, and keep several layers of newspaper under the floor mats. Change the paper before it soaks through to the carpet underneath.

You need rule your passenger's behaviour also.

It is fairly simple, a dry car will not fog up.

 

Do you have the A/C on? That will take moisture out of the air. If you hit th edefrost button the a/c automatically comes on.

Did you ever try opening the driver's window just a crack also?

 

This is the first winter that I have heard 0 sounds from transfer case or prop shaft!!

It's been 0 or below 0 last few days. My car starts up without a problem. No long cranks. Car drives great!
