Default Front Left Window movement mechanism gone kaput

As some of you may know we had a pretty big snow storm (Mid - North Eastern U.S. seaboard area) this weekend. I cleaned the snow off the car this morning and warmed it up....started driving, the car did a pretty good job in the snow.

Here is where things went wrong, I rolled my window (front left) down slightly to scan my ID card at the parking lot. It gracefully lowered and showed no signs of wanting to stop...so i park my car, lift the switch to close the window and hear the motor running with a squeeky grinding noise...

Long story short, I took the car to my trusted local mechanic and comes out that i need a new movement mechanism which will cost a total of $700 including parts and labor. I also have to get some work done on the car, it's got 60k miles on it and needs the outer tie rods replaced (quoted $380 for parts, labor and allignment). Also, one of the nuts in the front right tire broke inside the screw. Additionally, needs a new nut as the current one is about to get stripped (quoted $ 211 for parts and labor) to fix that. Grand total comes to around $1290ish (before taxes) Oh well! Thought I would share the pain.

You are correct that i will be fine with 4 nuts, but the problem arises when i get a flat tire and cant change it

care to elaborate why you think that 4 wheel nuts is enough?
do you think that they used 5 just for style?

Hey akhanaa, sorry to hear your woes. Thats a few bucks you're gonna have to cough up.
Just outta curiosity have you tried asking any of the techs here for their opinion? They may be able to advise you and save you a tidy sum, then again they may not, but if you don't ask you'll never know

Jimmy, I am not too sure whether you were replying to a comment on my post or pu5hkar's. I will go ahead and respond assuming it's to mine.

In my particular situation, the reason i think the 4 lugs are fine (for the short term) is because my mechanic mentioned they are on securely and even though the fifth nut has a broken top it is still securely screwed on. The problem arises when i have a flat and it cannot be changed. Therefore, I have scheduled an appointment to get this issue (amongst the others i mentioned) resolved tomorrow.

In a regular situation if there is a nut "MISSING" and NOT "BROKEN", then yes, the screw must be but put on ASAP as it is a hazard.....unless driving without a lugnut is in "style"
