Default Gear Oil in Transmission

Hello everyone,

So I am freaking out right now, I decided to follow some of the write ups on transmission and transfer case fluid change on here and made a huge rookie mistake. I accidentally put in the transfer case gear oil (Redline 75w 140) in the transmission and the transmission oil (Redline MT-90) in the transfer case. Will this cause any major problems to both of these parts? Didn't realize it until I was all done. Should I drain these both out and redo? I'm just worried I wont get to do this again anytime soon because of the winter. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

You'll be better off hearing this from someone with more expertise but...oh my, YES. You need to get the wrong fluids out. I'm almost certain that's going to mean dis-assembly. Sorry.

Default Flush?

Not what I wanted to hear but thanks for your response. You really think dis assembly is required? I was thinking worst case just get both systems flushed...I haven't driven the car don't want to risk it. I'm sure dis-assembly will be pricey

Hopefully it is a small amount in the transmission, the trans fluid will thin it right out, so a flush will likely take care of it, s long as it didn't get driven more than a little bit

Downside is the trans fluid will clean the transfer case our pretty well, you may need to flush and fill a few time to get it all gone.

Neither is likely to do lasting harm.

Personally I would just drain both items and refill with the correct fluid. The small amounts left on draining will not unduly affect the outcome. You will of course tilt the car sideways by 21" to ensure as much as possible comes out of the transfer box.

Read the procedure on how to drain and refill the rear Diff (may as well do it takes the same oil as the TC)
I would do the same to your transfer case.
get as much of the trans fluid out as possible and refill.
look at it this way if you have a leaky drive shaft seal in your TC case there will be trans fluid in there anyway I am sure there are a lot of AWD cars out there running just trans fluid in there cases by now.
if you really want to play it safe get towed to somewhere like aamco that can do a trans flush .
could have been worse at least you were not doing the trans and a coolant flush and got those mixed up

I do not think you have done any real damage and good for you for trying. Do not let this discourage you from doing your own work in the future
We all make mistakes its what we learn from them that defines us.

You all just made my day! Thanks for all your help and advice I think I will just drain and refill with correct fluids. I was just worried if anything left over would damage the system. And thank you for the encouragement Paulc732 I was going to do the rear differential as well but stopped as soon as I realized my mistake. I will give it another shot. Thanks again!
