help with strange odor from heater vent(update)
hi all,
i just joined this site and have been searching on my subject to no avail..........i bought the wife a new X-type in 2004.
it's 3.0 and has about 57K on the clock and other than 2 driveline, 1 transmission replacements, the car has been solid, and most enjoyable.
i drive a 07' chevy silverado, but the Jag is always the "go to" car when we go out.
lately during this winter season we have been smelling a somewhat peculiar odor coming from the vents when the heater is on. it mostly happens when sitting at the traffic light and goes away once we are back up to speed.
any ideas you may have that i should be looking at, please let me know.
oh yes, the odor almost has a butane kind of smell to it..........

Welcome...You didn't add where you are from are you getting this with the a/c and cold or with the heat? Only time I've ever had a different smell in my car was with cold a/c running. Otherwise heat only and mine doesn't make any smell. Some have used some spray stuff down in the vents which gets rid of dust and what not. You could try changing the cabin filter for the car and this may help. Sorry I couldn't help further

I would change the cabin filter (I understand you can get a charcoal one or std I would get the charcoal). As the car is 3 years old I would also kill the billions of bacteria that live in the vents especially when the temp is right (high temp?).These cause a musty smell and are easy to kill.I did mine with this stuff and it takes no effort to do other than placing the can on the floor in the back, pressing the nozzle and shutting the doors for 10 mins.See here:-

Hey summerwind n elcome to the forum buddy
Bucks right about the bacteria you know. Just outta curiosity, do you run your air con all the time, sometimes or never? If you dont run it often enough you will get a stale musty odour which can get quite bad and often smells like rotten cabbages / eggs etc.
You may need to get your A/C system flushed. Has that ever been done to your knowledge?

RE: help with strange odor from heater vent
well i found the problem.........and it wasn't till the little booger blew that i was able to see it in full.
first i found that the brake reservoir cap was split at the top of the threads....replaced, but still had the odor, but to a lesser extent.
what finally blew was the cheap (but expensive to replace) expansion tank (Ford's little joke to us all?).
of the 3 connections, the lower was fine, and the one exiting on the drivers side was fine, but the nipple pointing towards the passenger side blew clean off.
being the weekend and all, and the college kid needing to use the car or my brand new Black Sliverado, i decided to try a fix.
what i did was to heat the tank with an industrial heat gun, and then heat a piece of 1/4 pipe with threaded end, and carefully insert and thread this pipe into the existing hole. all went well, and then i roughed up the tank and proceded to JB weld the entire area by building up 3 coats and making a fillet around the new nipple.......i used the Black weld and after driving on and off for the better part of this morning, it is holding fine.
i won't leave it as a permanent fix, but only till it shows signs of leaking, of which i'll have a new tank ready to go in.
i do want to thank you all for your suggestions, and i also wanted to give you an update.

That expansion tank nipple is common for breaking. You said expensive to replace but cheap part? If you are talking about the labour, shouldn't be charged any more than 0.3 hours. It is easy to do yourself also. Only 3 hoses on it.

even as i was repairing it i noticed small cracks developing in the lower core.
i have also never had a brake fluid cap split it's top off on any other car i've owned.
a little history on the car, it has had 3 drivelines, 2 wheels and the transmission replaced..........interior problems have been the typical, popped up vents, armrest fell apart, A pillar cloth has delaminated, passenger air bag replaced (faulty)..........i love Jags, but this car is not what i expected as a Jag product.

Bearing in mind that the X is the entry level Jag
Thanks for the update on the fix

Yeah plus one on the dealing with quirks! I've just dealt with everything! Keep in mind every car has its fair share of problems they may be in different areas. The brake fluid cap is a new fix as far as I can remember and I've been here over a year and a half. Even a new reservoir is a new problem as well that I haven't heard of since I've been here! Sounds like you just got unlucky there summerwind!

yes the light stayed on, but only when it wanted to...other times it would function properly........they replaced the sensor under the seat..........worked for a week, then started acting up..........they replaced everything that had to do with the bag and what not.......been fine since.
i do realize that all cars may have a quirk or 2, but this car has seen the shop so many times that all the mechanics know me by name..........the wife too

Hi folks,
I have the same issue. When I bring the car to a stop, a strong odor emits from the vents.
Naturally, I suspected a brake fluid leak but try as I might I cannot find one.
My brake reservoir is full to the line and seemingly not losing any fluid.
I've looked all around whilst someone depresses the brake.
This odor is STRONG and reminds me of brake fluid.
I checked the above mentioned expansion tank and it looks fine.
SO...
What else, besides brake fluid, would make an odor like this when yuo bring the car to a stop?
After you stop, it goes away after a minute whether or not you get back underway.
Thanks very much for reading.
