help, third gear grinds:(
Hey guys, I want to see what part exactly is the
Problem.
I have a 2002 X Type 3.0 STANDARD.
sometimes when I'm stepping on it, and I shift
Into the third gear, it grinds. It happens sometimes
When I'm cruising but mainly when I'm going fast or
Speeding up. Just want to see what part it is so I can
Get it replaced or TRY to replace it myself. But please
Help me out here cuz I'm afraid its gonna mess up on
Me n I'm screwed lol thanx
P.s sorry if I post a lot on my car haha I'm just a rookie to
Jags n still learning

My car does the SAME thing when I'm really giving it some gas! My car does it in 3rd and sometimes in 5th. I found that because the tranny shift linkage isn't the same as when it came from the factory, the stick will indicate that it's in 3rd when it actually needs to be pushed one more mm to actually be in 3rd. Basically, you are riding half of the gears which is really bad for the car. I'm sure as soon as you hear the grinding you clutch and remove it from 3rd and then put it back in and it's fine? I have solved this problem by making sure I push the stick into where the transmission engages and not just the stick indicates it's in gear. Hope this helps! If you need to fix it, I would recommend new linkage bushings and lines which is a PITA and would cost some $$ and time.
My tranny did it worse when it had the old fluid in it. I did a complete write up on here on how to drain and refill the manual tranny which helped me engage the tranny a little better.

No. Those shown are suspension bushings. What you may need is a #C2S8635, which is the tranny cable set. The cable end bushings don't appear to be available separately according to the Jaguar EPC. You might be able to shim the bushings at the shifter to take out some slop....dunno. Good luck.

You'd need to get the cable set from Jaguar or possibly from a wrecking yard. I usually order parts from Gaudin Jag in Las Vegas.
There may be other issues causing the grinding. Worn syncros in the tranny or possibly the shift mechanism, which is in the top of the tranny where the shift cables connect.
Lastly, these trannys don't bang shift well. I generally shift more slowly to keep from getting a grind.
