Welcome to the forum Rhino, don't forget to post your intro in the new members section.

Do you mean that you cannot switch between main and dip beams or that you cannot switch the lights off at all?

High beams are constantly on when I turn my lights on. Will not switch to low beams when I pull on turn signal handle.

If the OFF/SIDE/HEAD light function works on the selector switch, it must be a fault with the dip switch on the combined Indicator / Dip stalk. Either the switch itself or the harness.

So you feel it may be the switch itself? I've read that when the problem is that the high beams won't switch on, it may be a relay or a fuse. Hmmmm..

I'm with Graham, I'd look at the stalk.

Correct. My problem is that my high beams won't turn off when I try to switch them to low beams. I researched this but the problems I've seen is that some people have a problem that the high beams won't come on when they try to switch from low beams to high beams. My issue is just the opposite. My high beams stay on all the time when I try to switch them off. .?!&@$. Maybe it is the switch. I disassembled the column and found the turn signal-high beam switch is a module, that may need replacing. Looks like an expensive module seeing that it is all connected to the actual turn signal, trip reset, and high/low beam unit. Any ideas or comments?

Rhino, before you go replacing more expensive parts, humor me on something. Get into the fuse box inside the passenger compartment. Now, if you look, you will see a component labeled R15 (upper left corner). Pull that out. Now located component labeled R17 (just below R15). Pull that out and then put it into the R15 spot. Now, attempt your headlights again. Did the high beams go out? If yes, your problem is the relay is stuck on and you need a new relay.

If the high beams are still on, then remove the relay in the R15 spot. Now, using a multimeter, probe between pins 1 and 2 and see if you are getting 12 VDC. If no, then you have a crossed wire somewhere in the car. If you are getting 12 VDC, unplug the plug for the multifunction stalk. If the lights do not go off, then you have a problem with your GEM module or the wiring between the GEM module and the multifunction stalk. IF the high beams went out at this point, then you have a bad multifunction stalk.

Hope this helps.

Wow, great ideas in troubleshooting. I will try this ASAP. I did take a look at the fuse box and pulled a few fuses and looked at them (F85, F86 and F67) and they were fine. I will try pulling the relay (R15) and switching w/ R17 to see what happens.

I have a stupid thought, do you happen to mean all 4 headlights are illuminated? All 4 are lights are on, on either setting. It's ok to cuss me for asking, but you never know.

Yes, I imagine that is the setup for high beams. All front 4 headlights are on in the High beam mode ( not the fog lights).

OK, I took out the R-15 relay and the beams are on low, however the high beam indicator is still on.

I took out the F85&F86 fuses as as a temporary fix until I can get the steering column module to replace that, which should fix the problem. Question is...should I leave the fuses out or the should I take out the R-15 relay instead?

Rhino, by having the high beam indicator on, that is telling me that your problem lies in either the GEM module or the multifunction stalk. I wish it could have been the relay, but in this case, you are going to be getting into the steering column to figure this one out.

Thanks "Thermo", Hopefully it is an aftermarket part and I can find one online somewhere. If it is a dealer only part, it sounds expensive. Is the GEM module on the steering column too. When I took the hood off of the steering column I thought I saw a self contained unit that housed the turn signal and all? Hmmmm...gonna have to do some research. I don't have a service repair manual and have done all maintanance by research online or just by my own knowledge. If you know where I may be able to access this or these parts, I would appreciate the info.

Rhino, the turn signal is its own little box. So, that is probably what you saw. The GEM module is in the dash area, not in the steering column.

Yesterday, I did a tranny flush on my son’s ‘03 x-type. I had to remove the battery and box to access the fill plug. When I was done and put everything back, I noticed that both the high and low beams were both on and they wouldn’t switch off. I read all the replies here regarding this and was about to try the suggestions, but then I decided to look in the manual. Under “headlights”, it mentions turning your ignition key to the number II position and flash them. I did this both with the lights in the off position and then in the on position. I turned the key to the off position then back on, tested the lights and voila, they were back to normal!
