Well I did it, bough an 05 White X Type, no lights, no codes. Looks brand new inside. My wife thought it was new. One of the cleanest 12 year old cars I've ever seen with 97K miles. In my garage, plan on next week changing trans, TC Oil, Rear Diff Oil. Only problem I found on the car, one each washer nozzle clogged, fixed in 5 minutes, also the front ash tray door does not open under its own spring tension, seems like a spring may be broken. Will look at that soon. Also found that the headlights like myself were sagging so I ordered the plastic gear kit to repair them. Any other tips. I do most of my own mechanical work so I have already looked at the details on changing the trans, tc, and RD cases. Thanks for all the advice so far, and to come.

Bought mine with 103000, now at nearly 190000, still runs beautifully... Im aiming for 250000.
I thrash it and give it some abuse. Its never left me stranded and i often make 3000 mile trips in it.

That car would not have been something I'd need to rely on for long distance trips, and I actively DIY. Very different situation than the OP it seems.

I've got nothing against aged cars in general, the oldest in my fleet turned 43 last July.

Bought our '06 with 74k miles on it. I think for anyone buying these cars , changing the trans fluid and transfer case fluid should be high on the list of priorities. I haven't done my differential fluid yet, but it's getting cold here and I don't have a heated space to work in so.... might wait until next year. I also had to unclog the little washer nozzles...heheh. Just about ready to give her a shakedown cruise. Just a couple hours out and a couple hours back. My goal being to get her in shape to where I am confident taking her to Florida in the spring.
But with yours.... you follow basically what you're doing. From reading here, you kind of determine what the "big things" are and you get those sorted out. Then work on the front ash tray..heheh (for me it's those little plastic caps over the child restraint anchors at the top of the rear seats)

So... have fun! And maybe we'll have coffee or... other... cause we plan on driving our around a bit! Seems that's what they're meant for

Today I changed the transfer case oil. It was number one on the list. Not too bad of a job all things considered. Jacked the car up and drained, switched sides and filled. Went with Royal purple Synthetic. I believe the maintenance has been done as well as the cars appearance, the oil that came out was very clean with little material stuck on the plug. Probably didn't need it but cheap insurance.


Found 2 other issues. The headlights are broken same as all the others, ordered the parts, took the front bumper off, headlights are out and one of them is separated, this was more work than changing the TC oil. When I get the parts I will separate the other light and repair them. Then reinstall and put the car back.


Here is my latest question, looks like the CV joint boot is leaking on the front passenger wheel, grease is slinging around on various parts. Anyone know how difficult the boot replacement is? I have never had to do anything with these on any car.


I noticed the inside air pump is a little loud, understand a cleaning is in order.


I cant believe how clean the under carriage of this car is. Not a spec of rust anywhere except the exhaust system. This car could not have been driven in bad weather.


Coolant looks good so I believe the only things left after the lights is oil change with filter, probably do the trans change doing it with the 3 quart at a time method since my guess is the trans maintenance probably was completed also.


Any other suggestions? Anybody know anything about the boot on the CV joint.

ABS light on - Speed sensors brittle and failed.

Engine Light - Minor leak from gas cap, upper/lower intake manifold gaskets.

Car would hardly run when cold - Upper and lower intake manifold gaskets need replaced.

Oil leaking under the engine - Oil pan gasket has failed. Drain the oil, drop the pan and replace the gasket.

The issues you're going to run in with these vehicles are listed below:

-Intake manifold gaskets failing

-Driveshaft bearing failing (Driveshaft needs replaced or bearing lubed). You may also have to re-align the driveshaft.

-Small plug underneath the throttle body will eventually fail because the plastic becomes brittle (vehicle will start, but instantly rev high and won't accelerate).

-Water pump will fail eventually and should always be replaced after purchase.

-Radiator will most likely fail at some point because of brittle plastic. You may also need to replace a few lines as they will crack as well.

-Air conditioner may leak and need to be serviced.

-Power seats will stop working eventually and they won't go up or down.

-Hood shocks will stop working eventually.

Aside from that you should be okay.
