This is a common problem. I used a large square shaft flat blade screw driver as a pry bar. Placing the blade towards the back of the tank with the square shaft under the edge of the cap and then lift up slowly on the handle. Be careful that you don't damage the tank.
The problem went away when I replaced the tank after the original started leaking. I think the problem basically only exists with the original tanks.
Also when replacing the cap I had to give it a good rap with the heel of my hand because it would catch in the same place as it did when removing it.

Hi,
I had this problem when I first got my jag, the cap is on tight so if it should come loose when driving you don't lose it, to remove it it just needs some gentle persuasion just unscrew it as far as you can and give it a good hard pull upwards, you shouldn't need to use anything other than you own hands to pull it off. Good luck.

Exactly the same issue here - have tried persuasion but hasn't worked.. may well try a wide bladed flat screwdriver then.... thankyou.. was worried that if I did anything I might break the tank - which I know isn't cheap :-(

I too have had to do the screwdriver trick . Mine unscrews , then just starts spinning , a quick lever upwards does the trick . Also putting cap back on , some times screwthreads dont mesh/catch . I have to apply downwards pressure & sometimes give it a sharp smack !!

Mine was stubborn like that, too. But the problem got solved when I accidentally broke one of the ports off the tank during the engine swap. Got a new tank on ebay. Cap on it does not stick.

For all x type caps to be like this suggests that they are supposed to be this way, when I first opened my cap I too thought something was wrong with it and bought a replacement cap but the new cap was the same, it's just a case of giving it a firm pull once you get to the spinning stage the same when refitting it will need a firm hit on top with your hand to engage the thread. This is the only car I've ever known with this type of cap but jaguar must have their reasons?
