Default How long should a power steering pump last?

Hi
My mum's Jag does very low mileage; it's an 02 reg and its total mileage is less than 40k. She had the power steering pump replaced with a brand new one in December 09 and has covered less than 6k miles since.

It has now gone again! The garage have contacted Jaguar to ask if they will replace it but they have refused on the grounds that the guarantee was 12 months. This doesn't seem right to me and I will be contacting Jaguar myself but first I'd really like to know how long a power steering pump should reasonably be expected to last please.

Could have been a remfg pump, which I would assume could be more prone to failure. But that being said any part can fail prematurally. For the difference in the cost of a new pump vs two times thr labor, I would buy new.

I would also check your Mum's driving habits? (full lock for too long)
Misuse & abuse can often lead to premature failure. (any part)

Cheers,

There is a valuable lesson here for anyone faced with a bad pump. First, look for sellers that offer a "Lifetime Warranty". Ones like O'Reillys and Autozone have those, but they are more expensive than the ones at places like Rock Auto who gives a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. Difference was $187, $225, and $110. All had $50 core charges, return for refund. Shipping in some.
