Question I need help deciding between these two cars please...

Thinking about buying this car: http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...5&aff=national or this car: http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...5&aff=national
Anyone know anything about them? My wife LOVES them but I don't know how expensive they are to repair or maintain. Thanks in advance.

Links work for me... But from the links provided above it looks like the 2004 is a 3.0 and the 2003 is a 2.5.

Also, wasn't all the TC issues on the 2002-2003 models? Weren't they sorted out on the 2004+ models?

And repair and maintenance isn't the cheapest thing in the world nor is it super expensive... You have to pay to play... and sometimes playing with jaguars can cause you to pay more than play... Thank god I haven't experienced anything too serious on my Jaguar.. 2005 X-type 3.0 with 57k miles to date... love it to death... It's a love hate type of thing for some people, mines been love for the past 2 years.

lol that sounded soo queer.

umm nitro.. have you checked the carfax's for both vehicles? They are for free on the links you supplied... It seems like the 2004 has had two previous owners, one in Florida, and one in Tennessee. No accident.

The 2003 has had three previous owners, first owner in Michigan, and the other two in Indiana... So rust is probably an issue since it has seen every winter season since manufactured. Also, the 2nd owner was involved in an accident and the 1st owner had its thermostat changed only at 13k miles

Here are quotes from the carfax:
Accident reported
Involving right rear impact
with another motor vehicle
Damage reported to:
Rear of vehicle

It's starting to look like the 2004 should be your best move... CHECK THE FREE CARFAX'S!!!

my best friend has a 2002 2.5 with 198,000 miles on it. it's the most amazing thing i've ever seen, no rust [a lotttt of scratches..lol] and it drives tight as ever, the seats are even still beautiful. it completely turned me on to Jaguar

Looks like only the 2.5 is available still. However, if it were me I'd only buy a car with 50k plus miles only if it were certified by jaguar.

Exactly, not being certified would kill the deal for me. If neither is certified, then wait. Many more will come along that your wife will trade you in for.

My 04 X is killing me with repair bills. Three wheel bearings, a driveshaft, flex plate, rear main seal, water pump, thermostat housing and a new torque brace... YMMV.

As far as I know if the car was returned to the dealer with a fender bender or was fixed by the dealer without reporting it to an insurance company it won't show up in Carfax. However, when a car is certified it still needs to go through the same checklist. It also allows you to add the Jaguar Select warranty to the car (which I would always recommend with a late model used car) for peace of mind.

I know of someone who bought a 2008 XJ that was certified and with the Jaguar warranty knowing that the passenger side door had been is a minor accident and had been replaced because the car has super low miles and was otherwise in perfect condition (actually some buffing on the door returned the whole car to 'like new' condition).

Point is that if you can get a certified car with the extended warranty it removes a lot of risk from the buyer. I'd get a certified car over one that is not certified even if the non certified one looked better cosmetically. But that's just mine approach.

My warranties have usually taken care of a lot of little stuff. For instance, on my x type I was able to replace my overhead console because the contacts came loose. It would have cost be $800 otherwise! My warranty also covered lubricating the emergency brake cable to eliminate a rattle as well as bushings for the rear control arm among other things....other stuff included replacing the passenger window tracks that were squeaking and the tubes for the windscreen washer. Not sure if these are expensive or not, but it takes the pressure out of making complex decisions and my 07 X Type is as good as new as well. Once the current warranty runs out I'll see if I can get an extended one
