I'm so pissed! Jag left me stranded!
Hey guys, unfortunately this may be the last straw for my jag!
I was on the highway traveling around 70mph when all of a sudden my car lurchedforward as if it was on turbo. than all of a sudden the engine started racing high in rpm. finally I had to pull over since the engine would rev but would not go forward. I do smell some sort of burning oil in my car as well!
My car is a 2002 X-type sport 2.5 liter with 80,000 miles. the automatic trans was replaced by the dealer at 40,000 miles. I thought it was the trans but no check engine light came on. My mechanic had it on the lift and the front 2 wheels would spin in reverse or drive but the rear wheels would not. No sound when you put it in drive, 1st or 2nd or reverse but when you put it in Park, it makes a horrible grinding noise.
My mechanic thinks the transmission maybe ok but he will look at the transfer case more thoroughly. Anybody have any ideas from just my description so far? I am at the end of my rope on this car. I am worried about the repair costs on this one!

Hmmm. without hearing it can't really tell. Is you "air deflector' in place?? Small little plastic air scoop right under the oil pan, scoop up cold air and diverts it to the gearbox for extra cooling.....I hear many follks are driving with theirs gone....tisk tisk....

Let us know what it ends up being.

thanks everyone for hoping the best. I have hope that the transmission is ok but if it ends up being the transfer case or torque convertor I heard they are not cheap either? what does VC stand for?
I will definitely keep you guys updated when I hear back from my mechanic.

Viscus Coupling..It lets, I think, a 60/40 split of power to the rear wheels and if the fronts start spinning, then the power is transferred to a 50/50 ratio to the rears..The VC is inside the TC. ( I may have the power deliverance backward..but the principle is to give you AWD)

Bought a used one for $200 from a junkyard. No warranty for me either. Bought one, got it installed, and she drove as good as new when I got her back
I know a used transfer case may be a bad idea, but I was lucky. The car I got it from had it replaced, then it was wrecked . A new transfer case = trade that sumbitch in because it's about $1500, plus the labor.
Get it done at a mom & pop tranny shop. The dealer will bend you over backwards without vaseline on the install costs.
