jaguar x-type purchase nightmare!
hi, well no happy with this jaguar x type 2002 2.5 .5 speed.purchased this car with low miles at 56400 miles on it.iti testdrove it andfelt it to be tight and nice ride.thought i was getting a good deal for under 10000. this car was in almost perfect shape as far as body and interior is like new except for drivers seat, shows some wear.
Well for starters the warrenty was not the greastest seeing i bought it from a used car dealer in mass. .2500 miles or 2 months. scary but , i thought well got low miles in awesome condition, one owner , although the warrenty scared me why not take the chance?.......bad bad bad decision on my part.
Within one month of owning this car the nightmare started!
#1problem 3 weeks, i noticed the transmission start clanking through gears.
took it back to dealer, they insisted that it was normal for these cars. (new 2 me!)
#2 problemin same week. the brakes started to sound like they were chewing up the rotors .
back 2 the dealer.. only to hear that brakes are fine and rotors needed to be replaced. they replaced rotors.....but didn't make a difference still sounded the same. once again they insistedthatproblem was normal also. (wow!)
i wasdriving around with clanking transmission and grinding brakes one month after purchase! now i move on to the next issues not long after the short lived warrenty expired.
#3 i get in my car one night and start it and i got a disco light show on the dash board! as i looked at this in amazement i could only think what next! shut the car off and turned it back on ...itnot happened again...............for at least 2 months when i decided to put the heat on and the blower fan just decided to stop working . with that disco light show before the grand finale.
#4 did i forget to mention the abssystem nowhas also decicded to demand fixing also. yep that was after i was coming down a hill and the pedal decided to click down to the floor before i hit the main street. i guess the trunk lock notworking was the least of my worries this morning.

You say this car had low miles, looked good and only had one owner... did you check this out by obtaining a car fax??? And when you bought this car from a dealer was it a reputable dealer or some small car lot looking to make a fast buck?? Did you ever think of getting it checked by a certified mechanic who could tell you if the car was mechanically sound?? Sorry to say but with any car purchase there is always a lemon in the bunch and that is why you need to do your homework before you make a major purchase like this one. Trying to say that all Jaguars suck is just wrong and won't get you much sympathy on this forum.

Well you should still have the warranty take it back and tell the car lot "I am not going to fall for the bananas in the tail pipe"! Don't leave until they agree to fix the car, nothing you mentioned is normal.
and do be hating on the Jaguar!

Your issues are not the end of the life of the car. they are fixable.
You need to work on each one and not lump them together.
Nothing is normal, but some of them may be quite quick and easy to fix.
Are you able to do anything yourself? getting a good deal on Jag service is very difficult. and the most economical way to solve all this is to get down and dirty and figure it out.
Brakes should be quiet. It is unlikely that all 4 wheels make noise at the same time.
does applying the handbrake while you are moving make noise?

Looks like he took out the toyota part...
How under 10k did you pay for the car? Any pics? To me it sounds like you overpaid unless you paid around 7-8k. If you only paid 7k for the car why would you complain about problems when you got a car that isn't that old on the cheap? Get over these problems and you'll appreciate the car more. If you need help this forum is more than capable of helping you.
Welcome btw...

If its not to late take her back where you purchased it.
have you driven cars prior to buying this Jag? or have you ever riden in someone elses car? When did you ever hear trans gear noises like grinding that is normal? or brakes that sound like they are being chewed up normal. You accepted that answer? If its not normal in a pinto why would it be normal in a Jag.
I'm afraid this guy got you. Dont be mad at the car be pissed at the seller and kick the buyer in the ***.

Did you get it from Herb Chambers?..lol thats where I got mine.
its been my experience jags are 50/50. Some last till 100k miles and beyond, Others die at 30k. Why I have no idea, I have heard stories of motors blowing, the TC case dies, the tranny dies, all parts of a car that are supposed to last. Its not like its a heater core or something relatively low on the maintenance scale of costs here.
I am going to try and unload my car as soon as I can. I got it with 36k miles onitand I have since put about 25k miles on it in overa year. Sticker was 13k and I paid 10k with trade, I owe about 8k on it now and cant wait to unload it.
I am already starting to get the electrical gremlins and parts that should last way longer are beginning to fail. I am sure a dead TC is on the horizon as well.
I like jags but they need to concentrait more on quality then chrome.

Remember peewee, the x-type was jaguar's attempt to get more people like you and I into the brand, and needed to drop the manufacturing costs considerably to make it happen, earlier model years especially. To do this, they didn't use the higher end transmissions and engines that the XJs, s-types, and xks got. You're in a ride that, if you do take care of it (i.e., don't abuse it and maintain it like our american counterparts), the engine and drive train can last a long time. Alot of members can attest to that. If you get a preowned vehicle that has been driven hard for too long, thats when the TC and transmission will give up. Its just not a car that can take a pounding...the parts just wont take it. Now you know why the x-type is being discontinued, and why the XF is alot more expensive as a new model. Jag won't make that, dare I call it a mistake, again.

True, the X-type is the entry level model however, if the car does not run properly and has many flaws such as the tranny (sealed for life, what a joke) transfer case (same deal) then it wont attract any more buyers and tarnish the brand (which it has).
I have owned all types of vehicles, ranging from low brow to top drawer. I had the opportunity to purchase an S-type and a XJ. The Nikasil (sp) problem in the XJ is a fatal flaw, the S-type has numerous engineering flaws mostly drive line related. (no wonder it was discontinued)I figured the X-type was a minimal investment with the most potential. I bought my car with 30k on the clock. I was the second owner, and I have since put another 30k on it. For a car with such fairly low mileage, it should not be exhibiting such problems. I properly maintain my vehicle but i am convinced it wont last 100k. A testament to jaguars engineering.
I like jaguars, but feel that more emphasis was placed on styling than on mechanical reliability which, unfortunately has almost bankrupted the company. The only thing more unreliable than a jag is a land rover.

But in all fairness..My Jag has been a very good car..so far (knock wood)
I've heard more about transfer cases failing...can't say I've heard too much on transmissions and especially haven't heard engines failing? I mean there are bugs in every car! I guess the thing that most need to look into is spending the extra money to get a car still under warranty. That same car you buy for 12k would have been more like 16-18k and would still be under warranty. Now take that 4-6k you saved and how much did you have to spend out of pocket?
I beat the crap out of my x-type especially in the winter and I'll say she held up quite well and my car was a 2002. I had her buried a few times last winter to where she wouldn't move because she was on her belly in snow, well lets just say I had to rock her to get her out, and I never had any major problems. The thing I find most is people that are enjoying their car aren't complaining about how the car is online. I've noticed this largely on the avsforums (audio video science forum about anything and everything with home audio/video) as everyone on the site only come to complain about stupid small things.
Hey peewee think you'll get another one?

Hey Aquill1,
I agree, most people post problems on this forum rather than praise.
I like the newer 04+ XJ design and would try to make that my next purchase if possible. Or a hardtop XK
Those two cars IMHO are of a very nice design. The 04+ have corrected the nikasil (sp) issue and are fairly more reliable. However, in todays economy who knows what the next purchase will be.

I still havnt bougth a x-type yet, but all the talk about the transfer failings have made me think twice on getting a 2001 2.5l
However, to day i got a VERY good offer on a 2001 2.5 with a 2 year warranty from a well known dealer in Norway so i guess theres no reason not to buy this one. (gone test drive it to morrow)

[align=left]Hi sexytshirtz,
I think the problem & noise with the brakes is the same I have had.
The Bosch Brakes need a little bit attention.
That means a mechanic should clean them, take out all parts and make them easy going with special brake-fat.
It was the same with my X-Type.
I was able to clean & fat it self.
All parts of the brake must easy go.
Oxidation and less fat can take an error to the correct function with the time.
Perhaps Bosch Company used less fat inside and it is no mistake to take a bit fat into the holes for better function.
My breaks are until I did that a SWEET DREAM, no noise, best function.
