just been given an x type sport v6 ,been on owners drive for 3 years has not been started ,moved in all that time ,oil clean and correct level ,coolant ok ,was thinking should i crank engine over a few time with socket on crank shaft nut before trying to start , any advise most welcome

Hi and welcome to the forum. If it has been standing for that length of time I would crank it over just to prove that the engine has not seized. If it turns ok then you will need to use fresh fuel as almost certainly the old fuel will have deteriorated.
Also you will need to give it a really good inspection on bushes and also make sure the rear brakes have not seized on if the handbrake was engaged.
Tyres may have also deteriorated.
