Looking at a 2003 X-Type
Hello,
I am looking to join the Jaguar family. I am looking at a 2003 X-Type 2.5. I have a few questions. Are all of the mentioned models AWD? The car has 62,000 miles, needs tires. I have offered $8000. Black w tan interior. Any paricular things I should pay special attention to? This car will be for my wife to drive. It looks good! Drives good, will be even better w new tires. Please any input will be helpful. Oh, how about tire recomendations? Thanks in advance for your help!!

RE: Looking at a 2003 X-Type
Hey phins,
the X type is a great car, especially with the AWD. If its a 2.5 it will have AWD.
Check if it has DSC as that would be a great option to have. Personally I'm a great fan of the Pirelli P zero but many members have different opinions so thats all down to personal preference at the end of the day.
There were a few probs with the early 02's but most of them ironed out by the 03's and certainly by the 04's.
Does it have a warranty? If not a good idea to get one for the t/c as they are expensive if you have problems with it.
Check for any whining sound during the test drive. Problematic drivers door handle release. Pop up dash vents.
There are a few other minor issues here n there that others will no doubt fill in for you, but if its a good car well maintained, you're good to go as long as you follow on with the upkeep.
A great car that'll turn heads and get people askin you how you can afford to drive a Jag?
Why not check out the X type FAQ quick link in the x type section? There's instant access to loads of issues / dicsussions / fixes and resolutions and discussions on just about every topic there!

RE: Looking at a 2003 X-Type
I think Jim hit it onthe head there.
I have an '02 2.5 5spd (is the one you've made an offer on a 5spd or auto?)
I gave $6k for mine, but it had 106k miles on it. 8k seems a good price for one with 62k on it.
my list assumes you're a do-it-yourselfer.
Common problems that aren't so bad:
1) rear- lower/front control arm bushings. $200. Makes a sound like you're bottoming-out the shock. Even after you replace the shocks... ask me how I know [:@]
2) brakes suck. $350. You won't realize how bad they really are 'til you replace them. MOST (not all) of us feel that QUALITY aftermarket rotors and pads are a wise investment. Then bleed 'em properly.
3) little stuff like the defroster vents popping-up. (use some good 2-side tape) and the driver's door latch sticking (careful how you remove the door panel, but WD40 does wonders for this one) etc etc.
Common problems that ARE a big deal:
1) Listen for a whine, as Jim suggested. a Whine may signify that the T-case is 'fixin to take a dump', as they say at my in-laws house. The t-case fails commonly on these cars. Mainly (in our collective opinion) because Jaguar has called it "sealed for life", and we say B.S. The rear-output bearing fails first, because the lube gets low and breaks down. Count on $1500-ish, and a royal PITA.
2) A "HOWL" under the car, usually when decellerating, and typically most notable when cold. This is most often a driveshaft support bearing... which, true to Jaguar form, is not available except as a driveshaft assembly: $1000
other than that, regular maintenance seems to make these cars last. We have some smart cookies on this site who've figured out how to do alot of things that make these cars last much longer.

Welcome to the forums Phins74.
Question to all, what is so special about the 2.5? If you had the option wouldn't you want to go with the 3.0? From my experience in the US, most 2.5's seems to look smaller for some reason. Maybe its the rim size? Not to sure and it could just be me - I just don't know better. Is it a 4cyl and more economical?
I have a 2003 X-type 3.0 and I love it too death. I getcompliments almost everytime I get gas. Speaking of gas I get 20 mpg and I really dont get it to highway speeds.
We just hired to new guy on the job today and he made a comment on how such a good looking car it was. Also mention how it seems many of the other manufatureres copied some of the styles from it too! I was gald to hear he noticed and so on - big 3.0 fan over here.

RE: Looking at a 2003 X-Type
Hey Christo,
both the 2.5 and the 3.0 are both V6 engines.
In size and every other aspect they are identical apart from a few extra goodies here n there as far as I know.
Usually 17" rims on the 2.5 same as the 3.0 unless upgraded I think.
Anyone living in the US I'd guess it'd make much more sense to go for the 3.0 too as gas is soooooo blooody cheap its annoying for us lot over here...lol
I don't even think there's a huge difference if mpg between the two.

In 2003, the X-Type was offered in front wheel drive with the introduction of Jaguar’s first diesel engines, and with the smaller 2.0 litre petrol V6."

As for the 2.5 vs 3.0 question.
Yes, given a choice I would've opted for the 3.0, but the 5-spd manual was much more important to me than the displacement. But I'll tell ya this, neither are rocket-ships. I wouldn't be buying the 3.0 for it's power, but rather as a compensation for ... well.... whatever.... []

You're right McJ.........not ALL X types are AWD of course, but I don't think there's ever been a 2.0d exported to US...you guys just wouldn't buy it, or at least i guess thats the thinkin behind it anyway.
Gotta agree as well on the engines....I wouldn't buy either if I was lookin for a super fast car, but then again, thats not really what Jags are all about, is it?
I had the 2.5 m/t as well....just so you know..lol

Well I gotta say Dennis, that comes as a major surprise to me
Over here as you say, we are all lead to believe that ALL Americans have at leasta 4 litre petrol variant, thats probably average, but most run around in some 5.8 litre sumthin or other and wouldn't touch a diesel wirh a barge pole.
But then, if you guys wanted a diesel soo much why not import one? They do lefties for other European countries so they must be available?

Well..It's suppose to lighten up soon..as the big stumbling block was that our refineries was only making high sulfur diesel and the European engines was made for Low sulphur diesel..The refineries are converting as we speak.....So it's gonna get better over here in the diesel imports soon.

I know they won't be everybodys cup of tea, but for those open minded individuals who go and try some 3litre or 4litre diesel, Audi, Jag, Bmw or whatever takes their fancy, wil be in for one helluva surprise. Especially if they get the ECU remapped.
Some of those babys can do like 0-60 in 5.9 seconds and are limited to 155mph and still get 40mpg there or thereabouts
I have to say even though fuel prices have came down ( wer'e still paying £0.97p per litre ) I'd find it really hard to justify going back to a petrol car.

I'm a believer in Diesels. I have been for a long time for my pick-up trucks. But I'm a recent convert when it comes to thinking about diesels in a performance environment. Seeing this car iin person made me re-assess my entire universe.

RE: Looking at a 2003 X-Type
Really? In researching the X-Type, every site (and person I spoke to) never mentioned an X-Type that wasn't AWD. Are the non-AWD X-Types available in the US or are they only available overseas?
Both Mercedes-Benz and BMW offer diesel engine vehicles in the US and, from what I've heard, more and more diesel vehicles are planned to be offered here in America.
