I wonder if anyone has used a replacement chip. It has claims of HP increase and mileage increase. Chips can be had for about $70. I am very trempted, but even car wax claims increased mileage so I am very sceptical. I drive alot, so it would pay for itself in no time if I could pick up 2 or 3 mpg.

I drive conservatively on the highway ('03 2.5 auto)and get only 25 mpg (not using the AUTO on the temperature control.) The car is just geared too high. I am running near 3000 rpm at 70 mph. My other cars are loafing at 2200 rpm at this speed. The car shifts 3 times before I clear the intersection. The gearing is just wrong, in my opinion.

Yea i know my driving habits probably doesnt do the car justice but overall i would say my habits arent all that bad. lol. I mean i do not do the Top Gun passes THAT often but it does happen. I noticed on the display that it says im gettin 21 mpg. Id like to call BS on that, and if some of you are basing it off that, id hate to be the bearer of bad news. If you do the actual math, its not right.

Overall, im just goin to the oil change tomorrow and put some fuel injector cleaner in and maybe pick up a K&N air cleaner and just leave it be. Maybe after i purchase new tires and get that leaning rear driver wheel issue fixed along with an alignment it may jump it back up into the 20's. Ill keep ya updated as you guys may want to make a change

I just filled up last night, it wasn't quite as low as it usually is when I fill it though.

15.2 gallons to go 380.0 miles, 25 MPG exactly.

The gauge seems to track fairly well too. I seem to get at least 50 miles for every 1/8 tank mark on the gauge, unless I am running it hard for a while.

Yea something is definitely wrong. I filled up and have been 90% driving expressway ON CRUISE CONTROL and right now im just over a half tank and at 92 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF is goin on.

Im feeling a huge drag on the car, not sure if its because its AWD but when backing up and letting off the gas, the car feels like its brakeing? Maybe in my head but i feel its a little much, not like most cars. I wonder if its because my rear driver wheel looks to be off on toe too. Its kinda toed out, which would make the wheels kinda look like this but horizontal....\ / but obviously not as dramatic.

I dont know, im tired of complaining about it. But i will have pretty much everything back in order in about a week. See how much improvement there is. But thanks everyone for giving me a base line of where it should be.

2002 X-Type sport 3.0L with about 90K miles (144000km) - I got 34 MPG but that is Imperial Gallons (~28MPG US), on average highway while doing a trip to Florida last summer.

Yeah that doesn't sound right. I don't ever feel a drag like that slowing my car.

I do remember you posting something about your rear wheel alignment before though. Did you ever try to get an alignment done? Based on having mine done, and what I have read, it sounds like the rear tires are suppose to lean in a bit at the top, and be slightly toed in at the front.

If your alignment is off that much to drag your fuel economy down, you are probably chewing up your tires quick too.

Maybe you have a wheel bearing or two on the way out. Or you could have a sticky brake caliper dragging.

Chopper I don't know what "chip" you are referring to but don't waste your money.

Hey guys, yea i know the wheels should have a "slight" lean but my driver damn near looks like this.../ and my passenger looks about right. As ive stated in that thread your refering to, is i have changed the upper and lower control arms. The only ones i have not replaced and what im banking on is the trailing arm and the one that holds the spring. The bushings look shot. Atop of that, this is the side that was hit in the carfax. I have taken some minimal measurements to see if the upper control arm mount is relative to the passenger side and its almost right on, so im guessing the subframe is ok. Im thinking the trailing arm that holds the spindle is jacked. Overall the car ive been parting out is a 30000 mile X near me and thats where i plan to get the parts form for 120 bucks and will also grab the spring just in case.

I really feel this issue most likely is the major contributor like you guys say. Also in that thread i said i had it at the "dealer" and they said they could not tell me exactly what it is and would hate to guess and it not be it. I do know it needs an alignment and is def on my list along with new tires. And yes they are pretty chewed up.

Default Update!!!

An update on the fuel situation...kinda funny yet stupid...i went out to my car at work to start it because its coulder than a well diggers a-hole here, and noticed behind MY GF PICTURE a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So i took it to my buddy and he ran a scan on it and found a P1647 / Bank 2 Sensor 2 code fault!!! Which it looks like O2 sensors. That would explain a LOT of the shotty gas mileage.

In other words, my gf causes me problems even when shes not with me.

LOL on the gf! Good luck, hopefully you can get your fuel efficiency back up there. Definitely run some cleaner through it though, you don't really know the condition of those jy fuel injectors. How about plugs? Did they look ok? Tire pressures?
RE winter temps, I'm contemplating pulling the lid on my air box to get some warmer air temps in the engine intake, maybe that will help with winter fuel efficiency. Oh wait, I just bought a 2011 Hyundai Accent to commute in, 36mpg 2400# five speed goodness.

I hate GM (with a passion) but they DO know how to make fuel efficient push-rod engines...

I feel that I have the same problem with my s-type. Every time I look at the fuel gauge the needle seems to drop constently, I look down then I look back down in 10-15 minutes the needle has moved again. It gets me pissed cause I don't drive crazy at all, don't have a heavy foot and I don't know if some thing is wrong with the fuel sender or what ever controlls the fuel gauge or if my jag just gets ****ty milage. I drive my moms cadillac escalade some times and I don't see that happen on it's fuel gauge and the escalade is supposed to get worse mpg. I looked at the engine on the escalade and saw that it hade a damn small engine. is this normal for a jag or is there some thing wrong here. I know this is a x-type thread but I thought I might e able to get help since my concern is fuel economy as well. computer says that im gettin 21avrg mpg. I don't know how accurate the computer is but it just doesn't seem right with the way the needle drops. any ideas?

When I had my X I was seeing an average of 22 mpg's with a mix of highway driving and city driving. And when I was on the highway driving to work (44 miles round trip 4 days a week) I was always crusing at 70 mph and still getting that mileage.

If I take a trip with mostly highway use I was seeing 25+ with my highest being 29 mpg.

It was a 2004 X, 2.5 w/ manual trans..

Try resetting the trip computer next time you fill up. Note your mileage. If you haven't done that in awhile the MPG won't change very much, so it's hard to gauge what you are getting at any given time. When you fill up the next time note your mileage and how much gas you put in. That will tell you just what your mileage is. The gas gauge is meant as a reference and can vary a bit, especially whenit gets around a half a tank. Just curious, when you add gas do you fill the tank completely full or do you run it down until there are fumes in the tank and then only fill it part way?

Every one of these posts that includes the words "according to the trip computer..." can be summarily dismissed. The computer can only provide a very rough estimate. The only accurate way to measure gas mileage is to divide miles traveled by gallons used over a long distance - preferably a full tank at a time. I make a point of doing the math against the trip odometer at every fill-up. Then I reset the trip odometer for the freshly filled tank.

I just finished a 600 mile trip, probably about 90% highway mileage at 70 to 80 mph. Average mpg was 24 over two tankfuls.
