AWD, it is sounding like you are having issues with the ECM. But, first if you can, get the codes so we can help narrow down other possibilities.

Autozone will get you the basics. I would spend the money on a decent OBD II reader if you are going to keep this car. Helps you and helps keep mechanics honest. At least in my findings. Several good units have been recomended on Jaguar forum. I love mine and end up using it more on everyone elses cars. Info on this forum is crazy helpfull and people are great.

The cruise not available is likely a vacuum leak. Do a search here to find the multiple areas in the engine compartment where they leak. Is there a possible coolant leak as well?

I've never had my temp guage go above the middle until it actually overhreated (almost anyway) due to a crack in the reservour tank.

im going to look for the vacuum leak, and with the temp ordeal it will be below the middle marker and outta no where shoot to the red, turn the car off then turn the car back on the temp is back down on the middle...?

awd, because you are seeing the temp gauge shift so fast, it isn't a true overheat condition. What you are seeing is something electronic affecting the temp indication. if it was a true overheat condition, it would take a few minutes for the temp to go from the upper part of the band back to normal with the engine off. Simply turning the car off then immediately back on is telling me it is electrical in nature, not mechanical.

Dumb question, but is it the original battery? I, too, smell electrical gremlins and nothing brings them out more than a weak battery.
