Hi there,
Long time reader first time poster. Finally got the X type I've always wanted. Up to now have had 2 diesel x types and a 2004 XK 8. Always fancied a manual 3.0 with sovereign interior and finally tracked one down for sale last week . .I know it's getting on a bit (2005) but the mileage is only 83k so I figured it's worth a punt.Trouble is ,with covid have gotta take it without all the normal tests.Just hoping it's ok.

Congratulations! I have a 2005 3.0 with manual transmission (non-Sovereign interior) with 154,000 miles and despite showing its age (transmission or transfer case whine) runs well and is a blast to drive. Without knowing the history I would suggest the obvious oil and filter change as well as fluid changes for the transmission, transfer case and differential. If you're handy and don't mind sliding under the car, it's reasonably doable DIY job(a lift would be a huge advantage). Otherwise, find a good mechanic to do the work. The procedures for changing the fluids are not common to other cars; I've copied them off this site and printed them out for my local mechanic and that's worked out well.

Best of luck!

Cheers Max.. Did manage to get a test drive and it seemed lovely. Am taking delivery this weekend. I have a great indie who is also a long time friend so I will take your advice and let him go over everything after a week or two.Am like a kid waiting for Christmas at the moment.

Hi Max,
Finally got to pick up the X type this week. What a lovely car to drive ! It lives up to the Jag ethos of Space,Grace and pace. ( Although perhaps not that much space in the rear ) The manual gear box makes for great acceleration and the 3.0 V6 gives a lovely growl when you put your foot down but is so quiet when cruising. And that sovereign interior !! Just sublime.
Will take your advice and get my Indie to give it a good look over in a few weeks, but for now so far so good.

These cars, despite what you might have read, are not really money pits; they just need periodic routine maintenance. By 2005 most of the known weaknesses like the transfer case were addressed, and some of the other specific problems detailed on this forum are due to over-enthusiastic driving. A 16 year-old car, regardless of brand, is going to have age-related problems most of which can be addressed with the aforementioned routine maintenance. Given the abundant amount of information available on the web, most competent and experienced mechanics can work on these cars.

Enjoy the ride!
