Default oil change

Hey guys i'm new to this site but i got a 2003 x-type last summer and have had it for about a year now. I have been putting high mileage oil in it during every change because it has 145 on it. It's very clean under the hood but after about 2000 miles from my last change i noticed my oil was already very black so I changed it again well before the mileage I was supposed to. I'm only 21 so i don't know that much about cars in general at this point. My anti freeze compartment broke during this time period but I turned the car off before it could overheat enough to cease my motor. Maybe that had something to do with it?

The plastic coolant reservoir is a common failure item and is not related to your oil change. I recently bought a 2004 3.0L with 104k miles and found replacement of this part in PO service records. In addition to the reservoir have a good luck at all the coolant hoses - of which there's a bunch. Also, oil color tells you nothing about its condition. Use a decent synthetic and good filter with reasonable change intervals and you'll be fine.

Oil colour is not a good indicator of health or need to change.

Hi Jacobyville welcome to the forum, from Sunny Yorkshire

I actually don't know what the 145 oil is but most guys go for synthetic or part synthetic -5W30

Hi Jacob. The recommended oil for the X Type is 5/30w Fully synthetic. There is no High Mileage oil so it maybe that you are using the wrong one.
If you are doing high mileage then you will be getting the best out of the oil and would only need changing once a year or 10k. The colour is insignificant. If you have a diesel then the oil will look dirty which is natural.
