One for RacerX
Hi, Welcome back..I never knew you before now, but I've seen some of your great posts and help..Nice to meet you at last..
Anyways..We here over the past 9 or 10 months on several threads have discussed and re-discussed and then discussed some more, the topic of the TRANNY FLUID..Please bear with me..
We all know how fussy this damn JATCO is and we also believe this "filled for life" BS is BS!!.
Okay..I have found only on the web that Royal Purple Multi-spec will meet Jatco's specs, Valvoline MaxLife will too..BUT, and it is the onlyBUT that matters..Will these aftermarket fluids have adverse interactions with the current factory fluid???..Some of theexpert JAGUAR X TYPE techknowledge folkstell us yes, they will not mix well and lead to a failed Transmission...Keeping in mind, if the tranny is just drained, it still has a torque converter and coolerfull of the old fluid still, so there is no way to completely drain the tranny...and keeping it simply at the same time.
I want to change mine, at least do a couple of drain and refills to flush most the old fluid out..But I hesitate for fear that I may cause myself problems in the long run..
Oh, the motivation here is that the Dealer only sold JATCO fluid, is around $45 to $55/qt..And we need at least 9 quart...So there has to be a cheaper alternative ..
Okay I'm done..Hope to hear from you on this..I'd like to hear your take.
TIA

RE: One for RacerX
lol, sorry, was at the pub....ok, tranny fluid, my fav topic.
sealed for life=crap. First thing first. type of tranny fluid. DexIV. period. All that other nonsense is just that. If i remember correctly 10qts, (9.3) that includes the troque converter.
To drain, my fav way, disconnect the lines going to tranny cooler. In and out. Get a pan, put both line in the pan securely, or have someone hold them. start car. fluid will drain (with some force), when it starts to "gargle" turn car off. Everything is now drained. Open the plug on top of tranny, use long funnel and add about 3-4 qts, start car, and add remaining fluid while car is running. Now, if want an Altimate clean job, repeat this step with the clean fluid, drain and add clean fluid again. reconnect everything and you're golden. Approx time, 1.5hrs drinking beer, 2.5hrs.
Hope that helps.

You'll hear the gargle from the disconnected lines, no, tranny will not need to be dropped, but you may have to remove the Air clearner assy to get to the plug. If you have real small hands, maybe you won't have to, but it makes the job that much easier if you remove the airclearner assy IMO.
You can't miss the plug, hex nut, about 15 mm (i think) don't remember.
look between the aircleaner and engine, you should see it.

Don't remember the cork...mine had the hex nut. Directly under the batter i think.
You can measure what you took out, or just add the 10 qts. If you crawel under the car, the check level plug should be easy to spot. Add 8 qts, open and check, if no fluid comes out, add another qt. etc....
