Default Which one would you buy?

All cars cost the same. The choices are:

A: 2006 X Type 10K miles
B: 2007 X Type 39K miles
C: 2008 X Type 48K miles

Given that there were no substantial changes between these model years, which one would you pick? Miles v. Year

Depends on what mileage you're gonna put on, if it's low I'd take the newer car, if it's high - take the lower mileage. After all you're only talking a couple of years anyway.

Why the hell would any of you buy a car with almost 50k miles over one with 10k?

I would always go for the lowest mileage if all other things are equal. But make sure that the low mileage isnt because the car spent a year in the shop getting fixed after an accident or something. Check the carfax.

Whichever one has the least miles/no accidents is what I'd go for... Unless one of the other ones is a color combination you absolutely cant live without.

Interestingly that was a delimma that I was faced with when shopping with a friend who wanted to get an x-type (of course riding and driving my 2007 and being able to compare it with my C280 was a big part of it).

We checked out a couple of dealers and the initial thought was to get the 2007 with 39K miles since it is completely loaded (except has 17 inch wheels). We ended up seeing the 2006 which looks new inside, outside and underneath! Carfax report showed nothing unusual. Compared to the 2007 x type it is missing the navigation, but has 18 inch wheels and ACM (audio control module)...so the 2006 suddenly started looking like a great buy...

Then noticed a 2008, no navi, no premium sound (both the 2006 and 2007 have the Alpine audio) and no wood on the steering wheel (again both 2006 and 2007 had it) also the 2008 I believe has 16 inch wheels...but it is a newer model.

All three looked great cosmetically and all drive well...no rattles or anything...

My vote was for the 2006 with 10K miles (I said you're getting a new car for 1/2 off!) My friend is still tempted by the 2007 because of the navigation and seats with the piping...

Supposed to pull the trigger in a couple of hours!

What are the rest of the variables? Are all of them autos? All with the same packages for audio and cold weather, etc?

Normally I'd say go for the newest, but 10k miles is extremely low. Still under warranty I would think?

Disregard first sentence, I was typing as you must have posted.

Inspect the inside door edges, under the hood along the supports, and under the trunk. Look for overspray or anything odd. Carfax won't tell you everything.

Agree with the carfax statement. I think there's a lag between the sale and carfax reporting. I think people sell their car quickly after a crash/repair so that carfax can't catch up...the report looks clean if you sell quickly enough. It is wise to look for overspray, bent members behind bumpers, new bolts, etc.

Also -- that's a tough one you are posing. Options can really enhance a car experience (like Wheels, grill, Nav, Bluetooth, and ACM)...it's always SIGNIFICANTLY costlier to add those options later. I think the safest/most prudent bet is the low miles one. Miles are a very big factor when it comes to wear and tear on a car.

for me year has no significance, because i will choose wehicle that is in best condition. in three examples the milage is small.
look at the x-types and see which one ist in best condition.
it's the best way to choose.

I would be leary on buying a 4 year old modern car with 10k on the odo as of course it wasn't driven much. This likely means that the engine probably didn't reach normal operating temp long enough to burn off the condensation which then would be absorbed into the oil and pool in the exhaust. If the oil was changed every year with sythetic every 6 months with regular oil I'd be a little more inclined but cars are meant to be driven! Now the previous statement about buying the best one overall would be what I'd follow as well. Just keep in mind what 10k in 4 years means (either a long peroid of nothing or lots of short trips which means it might be low on the odo but high on the abuse factor!)

Benebob has a great point. I personally would take the one with the best options, personally i would take the one with th nav, you can always buy th 18" wheels whn someone shmucks their car, and sell yours to offset the cost. the oldest car with lowest miles will depreciate faster than th other 2. The newest with highest mileage will hold its value longer should you not plan to put miles on it in the same fashion as the previous owner.. maybe in 2 yrs it will be more of a "normal" mileage and still have good resale. Best advice.. which one makes you excited the most when you sit in the seat.. nothing is more important than your gut feeling....

If all cars seems to check out mechanically and have not been in accidents, etc. I think I would go with the 2007. Still under warranty and has enough miles to go that you could give it a good shakedown for anything bad to become apparent and still get it fixed under warranty. Plus, it sounds like it has more features than the 2008. The 2006 might be a good buy at 10k miles, but I agree with the poster that mentioned if those miles were accumulated at less than operating temps on a regular basis, that might not be the best thing either. And chances are that if the warranty hasn't expired yet it will very soon.

Overall, I guess there is no right answer here. Too many personal variables involved. In the end I would guess at worst you end up with a great car that you really feel passionate about. Sounds like a pretty good situation no matter what. Let us know what decision was made.

Ended up with the 2007. The 2006 was already sold and the choice ended up being between the 2007 v. another 2008 with 25k miles on it. Fully loaded except for 16 inch wheels and no navi. The dealer wanted $3k more for the 2008. The 2008 with higher miles was not as well equiped and had more miles. Also my friends wife preferred the red with champagne interior v black on black 2008 ( the one with fewer miles)

Just out of curiosity and if you don't mind me asking, what did it end up costing? Just curious as to what a 2007 wouold cost these days.

I would go for the 06 with 10k miles. Hopefully its from a Jaguar and has the select warranty so its good until 2012.

And by me there is a 2008 with 16k, listed for $28,000 @ Jaguar of Great Neck. They also have a black 06 for $22,000 and a blue 04 for $14,000..

The 2007 came in at $21,995 all in. The low mileage 2008 x type was $24,995 all in and the 2006 was $19,900 all in. By all in I mean all the tax, tags, licence etc. They were all from a Jaguar dealer. The 2007 and 2008 were from the same place I got my 2007 x type back in 2007.

By comparison a 2007 Mercedes C 280 4 matic with the same miles as the x type was also $21,995. It had sat on the dealer lot since early March. Why do I care? I have a 2007 C280 4 matic as well!

A BMW 328xi from 2007 was $23,995.

All cars were immaculate lease returns. The 2006 which we were too late on was practically brand new. Of course I am assuming given the low mileage and age it would need to be fully lubricated and things like bushings replaced. The 2006 also had the ACM which I have found on my own x type to be a very important feature. Moreso than navi or CD changer.

Looks like the dealers are getting nice mark ups on good quality x types. But these were all lease returns...

I guess that is a personal thing. I'd rather not deal with eBay. Plus we got it with the jaguar certified warranty and it really comes down to what works for you. Is there a better car for cheaper? Perhaps. But value is in the eye of the beholder. Like I said the 2006 was gone in a day.

It's a free market. Both the buyer and seller have to agree to the deal and there are pros and cons of buying from private v. dealer.

For what it's worth, I've seen cars posted as immaculate on eBay that were anything but in real life! Usually if the paint job is good it's considered immaculate. If you drive it you'll notice all the issues.

Glad your happy with it, you're right about price being in the eye of the beholder and hopefully you get what you paid for! You know I did see a Yugo cheaper the other day too in case you're interested

I went the opposite direction and got a higher mileage 05 off ebay for a song. Couldn't be happier but then again, I put less than 5k on my vehicles in a year and hate to see the money falling out of them while they sit. To each his own!

I picked up my 02 off ebay for my wife with 47,000 miles on it for 9 grand. After about a year no regrets yet.

My 02 Range Rover also got off ebay with 49,000 miles on it for 10 grand. Although I have only had it 2 months so far so good. It is nice you got a warranty though. Good luck! Enjoy your new Jag.
