Overheating
Hi I’ve just got a xtype jag but have a problem with the fans not coming on and it ver heating I’ve changed the thermostat and put a new cap on the water tank can anyone tell me what the problem could be
grandad, odds are, your water pump is toast. If you ahve any mechanical ability (sounds like you do since you did the thermostat), the water pump should be and easy thing. You don't mention the motor you have, but atleast on the 2.5L and 3.0L petrol engines, if it takes you an hour to do the water pump, you are taking your time. It is super easy to access and is the easiest water pump I have ever done on a car. If you need more assistance, just say so and we will provide some.
Odd the fans are not coming on at all.
Water pump will definitely cause overheating for sure, but I assume you are getting the temperature gauge also showing you the engine is overheating. If so, the ECM (engine control module) should be calling the fans to come on full regardless of water circulation efficiency.
Might pay to check fused F16 (5 amp) and Fuse F40 (80 amp) in the power distribution fuse box (assuming petrol engine model and post 2005 production model). Both are related to supplying the fan module.
You could have dead fan motors - test by disconnecting from the fan control module (FCM) and briefly putting a 12 volt supply source on each fan to do a quick test.
Check for any wiring loom damage that might have occurred due to rodents if the car has been sitting for a while, particularly near ECM or fan control module.
If fans are good and fuses are good, you might be looking at a failed fan control module (front left of engine bay by radiator under battery).
Fan modules typically fail by switching fans full on all the time, but if the fuses are good and fans OK, then most likely fan control module not responding to ECM control signal (assuming no wiring damage).
If the fan control module is to be replaced, fit original type, not cheap Chinese "knock off" as many members have found they don't function the same.
