Default Poor fuel consumption x-type 2.2d

This is my second X-Type, first being an automatic petrol variant where i achieved on average 28mpg and i owned this car for 5 years.

Replaced this with a 3 year old 2.2diesel auto model that has only 7,000 genuine miles on the clock.

I live in a (UK) rural area, have a very light right foot and am not driving high speed or in built up areas. Traffic conditions are 'light'

I am only achieving 33/34mpg and I am very dissapointed. I would be expecting something better than 40mpg.

Has anybody had similar experience and therefore any suggestions?

I have a 3.0 gas model and I have yet to achieve 15 mpg. I get 14.8, 14.9 each time I calculate what I'm getting. I thought it was pretty poor but seeing what others get I guess its about right. Its cold here now and I only drive a short distance to work (7 miles) and its all stop and go the whole way.

Hey buddy, congrats on the X type 2.2d....great mix generally of performance and economy.

It sounds like yours has barely been driven and perhaps babied at low speeds and low revs since new, sounds like it could do with a clear out, perhaps an Italian style tune up?

Presumably the air filter is in good order as is the fuel filter?
bear in mind it will loosen off and perhaps improve some once it gets some decent milage under its belt.

As you probably are aware, the 2.2d engine is the same as used in the Ford Mondeo ST Tdci........Here is a link to a Ford site where all manner of powertrain & running gear issues have been discussed / resolved.

Category:Mondeo Mk3 - www.FordWiki.co.uk

I'm sure you'll find it invaluable

Default Jaguar 2.2D - high fuel consumption

With a very very light food on an overland drive, the 2.2D shouldn't consume more than 6 liters/100km or 39mpg. The 2.2d won't consume less than 5.5 L/100km (better mileage than 43mpg). That's rock bottom and hardly achievable.
If it does more than 6L/100km, light foot and overland, it can be caused by a plethora of things. Most of them cheap to fix. According to a website where everyone can report fuel consumption of his car, the average of all reports related to the Jaguar X400 2.2d is 6.8 L/100km (35mpg).

First, service your car, change oil, oil-, diesel- and air-filters and make sure you have no error code on the obd-2.
Check tire pressure, empty your trunk and make sure brakes are in good working order, i.e. no remaining wheel friction when brake is released (I had this once due to the handbrake wouldn't release completely). Turn off your a/c when test driving.

If the problem persists, eventually with additional symptoms like engine stutter and/or hesitation at certain speeds, have a look at the maf sensor, map sensor, crankshaft position sensor and camshaft sensor.

In my case a failing MAF sensor caused stutter and hesitation at certain speeds (around 50, 70 and then 90-110kmh) together with a deep, grinding sound when having the gas pedal slightly pressed at the mentioned speeds (all 3 speeds are gear change points for the 6 speed auto tranny). It was the MAF sensor! And no engine light, no obd2 error code. After replacement and relearning the symptoms were gone and consumption back to normal. The MAF and the camshaft sensors are easily replaced. Can be done by any inexperienced hobbyist. The map sensor is below the EGR valve and requires quite some labor. The crankshaft position sensor is on the right side in the back, quite deep down. Also rather a case for an experienced mechanic.

When replacing it, it'll be a good idea to also check the EGR if not clogged and the turbo (leaks or stuck).
