snully, this is a common problem with the year/model car that you have. Come over to the XJ area and you will find out a lot about it. The short of the story is that first gear is not synced and when the car downshifts into first, it can be a little rough. There is a new program that can be put into the tranny and having the fluid changed can also ease up on the harshness.
