Default Q...about brake pads..

Hi guys, I need to change my front brake pads soon and I dont know if I should replace them with OEM pads or try something else.
I've heard some EBC pads are good but still not sure which one..I have 04 with 3.0 engine if that help.
What do you guys use and where to can I get them.????? \
Thanks

When in doubt go with OEM. That's how I've always felt, at least.

That said I've been very impressed with the Akebono ceramics on my XJR. Lots of stopping grip, quiet, and NO DUST !

Not sure if they make 'em for all Jag models but its worth a look, IMHO

Cheers
DD

Akebono Euro Pads..nothing can compare. Add to the mix, EBC Sport Rotors and you have a perfect combination that exceeds OEM stuff by miles..

Jag now supply EBC Greenstuff as standard. Redstuff are much better especially when added to the slotted grooved rotorsspeaking from personal experience.
Akebono also seem to be a favourite with a few members from past experience.
Check out the quick link thread in the X type section for pretty much everything ever posted up about brakes / pads / rotors.
Good luck with whatever you decide to go with. One things for sure they'll be a step up from stock.

What if i just want pads that dont give off so much dust? I already have newer rotors and want to ride them out.

According the TireRack site, Akebono's Euro Ceramic pads are low noise and low dust, plus they're claimed to be gentler on your rotors (which should translate into longer rotor life, and a less frequent need to replace the rotors).

What about their stopping power on stock rotors?

Not sure. TireRack gives them a 3 out of 5 stars for stopping power, which after looking at their rating system. seems to imply they're as good as OEM, not materially better. The areas where the Akebonos seem to excel are in low noise (5 out of 5 stars) and low dust (4 out of 5 stars), and of course the aforementioned low rotor wear.

Maybe some owners on this forum who use Akebono pads can provide amore personalassessment of stopping power.

I really dont think the stock setup stops that well. I would imagine all the brake dust means soft pads and better gripping power- what do the pro's think?

I'm no pro, but I have over 35 years with messing around with Brakes..Call it my subjective opinion, but based on my personal experiences and candid objectivity....

The Akebono Euro pads are the best for stopping, quiet and dust free performance (all great attributes in one package)compared toany OEM pad and Rotor set up I've seen or used..This includes, but not limited to;Mercedes, Toyota, Nissan,Land Rover and of courseJaguar...I don't know how they will work with stock rotors, but they are superb, working in harmony with EBC Slotted and Dimpled Rotors...Did I mention wear?...after 15,000 miles they look like barely any Pad material has eroded and the Rotors look like new and you can't even feel a lip in the edge of the rotoryet.

This is my 3rd Jag. I can't say that I've felt any of them were weak in the braking department so I'm not gonna say that Akebonos made it feel like I could stop a freight train or anything like that.

WhatI particularly like about the Akebono pads is that they are very progressive and easy to modulate ...unlike some HP pads where you feel like you are trying to push over a brick wall with your foot. Kinda hard to describe but if you need a lot of brake the Akebonos have a "bite" quality to them that inspires confidence yet in gentle driving you just have to tickle the pedal for a nice stop.

I know this isn't a very scientific description.

Cheers

Steer clear of stock.Mine nearly killed us and there was still plenty of wear on them.
Upgraded to Redstuff ceramics all around with turbo grooved discs all around (the ones with slots and dimples) and after nearly 2 years on the pads and discs look virtually new still
Re brake dust....only dirt on my wheels is road grime even after some long hard braking and that wipes off dead easily
Great brakes wont buy any other kind ever again.
Nearly had a few )0(s intoback end and have had to release the brakes to stop getting rear ended by some nutters who try to drive too close or arent concentrating when I brake hard even though they think they have room.
Nice feel to the brakes hot or cold, dont fade and stop me when I want top stop where I want to stop!

My X-type experience totals perhaps 30 minutes so I'm not really familiar with them at all. I am a bit surprised at comments about weak-ish braking on a Jag. Are the brakes just not big enough or what?

The brakes on my XJR seem fantastic, as did the brakes on my older Jags. They'll "Stop on a dime and give two cents change"

<shrug>

The brakes are taken directly from the lighter Mondeo Mk3 which is why I would guesswith extra weight of the X Typewith AWD braking efficiency suffers

So based on both of our stories... we both had bad worn oem brakes...
Wrong, my original Jag brakes werent worn, they still had plenty left on them.
After seeing the brakes myself I then had this verified by a dealer and a specialist...plenty of wear left on them so they should have been OK...but they werent...they were far from OK and couldnt stop safely the car even at low speeds.

I can't believe I stayed out of this one for more than a full page after Bo posted.....

It irks me something fierce when Bo gets all condescending on us because he feels like we haven't given Jag stuff a fair shake....

So, once more for the record: NEW JAG BRAKES SUCK. And used Jag brakes are crappy to the point of dangerous. This is "as compared" to nearly all of the other aftermarket items out there.... including (but not limited to) EBC.

Several of us have tried the JAG stuff. Some of us (myself included) even to the point of driving another identically equipped NEW one, so I could figure out what was wrong with mine. HA! Turns out it's s'posed to feel like that from Jag!!!

So once again, Bo pops-off with the "I know better than all of you, in spite of everyone else having FHE"....

To the original poster: Bo seems to display a tremendous amount of negativity towards modifying any part of your car, so keep that in mind when you read his posts. (As a side-note, he also has no respect for any knowledge gained at the racetrack, or from any-one other than himself... and I guess I should also tell you that he very quickly earned the position of my own personal "Forum Nemesis" [&:].... in case you couldn't tell )

A VERY accurate impression of the X-Type's brakes can be gained through sampling the experience of everyone who has posted in this thread.

My own personal proclivities run towards the EBC rotors and RedStuff pads.
I can absolutely guarantee you that EBC has spent much more time and resources on sorting brakes properly than Jaguar has.
