re 2002 jag Xtype 50, 000 on clock will not go into Drive

I was reversing the other day ...suddenly there was a car behind me I panicked and in haste pushed the gear shift to Drive to go forward. The gears Will Not go into DRIVE, but works in all the other gears. This car is treated like a baby. I am 78yrs old and devasted

When you say "all other gear". Does that mean you obviously have reserve. But "D" theres absolutely zero, but in 4 it moves forward? If so, have you CAREFULLY driven it in like a neighborhood area where you can carefully put it in 2, accelerate to see if R.P.M.'s get high enough that it feels like you should now select 3 & it does shift to 3 when selected?
