I haven't done it yet on the X but on other cars the way I have always done it is to carefully slip a screw driver blade inbetween the pad and the piston and then pry it back being sure to go at it in different sections to avoid cocking the piston. Just have to be very careful not to damage the seal. I'm sure there are other methods but this has worked for me.

Cheers mate. Sorted it. Looks like you have to wind the bugger in. Could not see it at 1st as the hex that you put the allen key into was full of crud. Pig to get it to start to wind back, but sorted now.

theres a caliper piston tool that does it for you too, makes it a lot easier for anyone else thinking about changing the breaks. the tool only costs about $30 and u can use on a lot of different car makes and models.

This is the one that I got and it cost me 10 bucks. It works just for the rears, as the front you just have to push back in!

Any pics? I am needing to do my brakes pretty bad. After thoroughally cleaning my car today I looked at the rotor and the freaking bad has taken a pretty good chunk of use out of them!

Just put some loctite on and torque properly. OTOH, when I put front pads and rotors om mine, the pads came with new bolts. If they hadn't, I wouldn't have replaced them.

I did the brakes on the S last night, and that cube didn't fit the rear caliper. It was the first time that I did the brakes on the Jag, and the brakes were fine but the previous owner put the cheap **** on the car and they would squeak! Bendix Ceramic pads in the front now, and quiet like a mouse! They lock up real good too! I though that the rear was supposed to twist in, but I was twisting the rear caliper for like an hour and that **** went no where!

Hey guys, I hope this helps because I had the same problem with the left rear caliper. the piston would not go back. I thought I would have to spend $700 for a new caliper, but I called a local jaguar dealer and they said for some reason this one is screwed back in -- COUNTER CLOCK WISE. I told my independant mechanic and sure enough it worked. I hope this helps you save some money!!

I'll try it tonight, but if it does screw in counter clockwise, I hope I didn't damage it by turning clockwise as long as I did. I spend at least 45 minutes turning that **** and it didn't come out at all! So if it doesn't come out, why would it go in if you turn it the other way? Either way, I'll let you guys know tomorrow after I change the rear brakes!

1 does turn clockwise and the other anticlockwise. Turning the wrong way will just wind it out rather that in. I needed to ensure I pushed in on the socket as well as turn it for the 'thread to catch' if this makes sense.

I'm glad that was helpful.
Anyone recommend a specific brake pad for their x-types. I heard alot about these ceramic brake pads such as better braking and more importantly no brake dust? are they worth it? and would you replace both the front and back brake pads with ceramic pads? thanks!
