Default Should I pull the trigger on my first Jaguar an X-Type 3.0???

Should I buy a early 2000's Jaguar X-Type 3.0 AWD? Looking for opinions I really love the styling and interior of these cars. They are reasonably priced and im looking for a extra car for 5000 or less. Been doing my homework do the 2002-2003 models have more problems then the later year x-types??? Looking forward to your responses.. Thank you

Currently looking @ a 2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 113k

I would never buy a xtype any year unless it is very well maintained with suspension replaced, hoses, coolant pipes etc replaced. These imo have always been the cheapest jaguar to get into and the most expensive to own. That car should be $1500 or less. I paid $1500 for a 02 xtype 7 years ago for my oldest daughters first car. Then dropped another 3k in it in parts to bring it up to trust worthy imo status.
Buy another well maintained jaguar that will cost a little more but be less to maintain. Thats my 2 cents

acg, yeas, you are correct in that the earlier 2002-2004 cars seemed to have more issues. By now either the issues have long been sorted out or maybe the car was scrapped. I would recommend buying the latest model year you can afford/find and one that appears like the maintenance has been kept up. If you get one change all the fluids, transmission, transfer case, differentials, etc. Make sure that you drive it first and see if there are any unusual noises or suspension issues. Keep in mind that for $5000 or less you are getting at least a 12+ year old car, so there is probably something that will need to be addressed. You just need to know what that might be before you buy it.

The X can be a very reliable car, but if it was/has been neglected there is a good chance you could get frustrated owning it. If you find one that has been well taken care of it could be a bargain.

Good luck!

i knew I had heard that "cheapest Jaguar to own most expensive to maintain" quote from someone who actually has actually worked at a Jaguar dealer for quite a long time.

And its it's very true. These cars are not cheap to maintain. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security with all the cheap e-bay parts you see. Those parts cost cheap because they are cheap. I am on my second X type. 50K miles, one owner, maintenance history, and I paid a third party to do an inspection..... It's already developing a nice long list of items that need replacement. Items that you would not expect in a low mileage well maintained car....... I do not have a problem with it because I knew exactly what I was getting into, but just understand what ownership is like so you won't have any unpleasant surprises

Suspension and coolant R&R doesn't seem to really be too difficult to do myself so I'm not really worried about them now. I have noticed from video and people talking these cars aren't too hard to work on so I like that factor.

$1500 seems a little low I wouldn't want the quality of what comes along with a $1500 X-Type I would run for the hills......3500-4000 is the budget I have and I'm trying to buy the best X-Type I can get.

I'm Picky trying to find the lowest mileage best condition X-Type I can buy.

I'm curious on the parts prices complaint.........Have your tried www.rockauto.com I was on it earlier all the prices for parts on this car are mostly reasonable aswell as good quality parts from trusted manufactures.

I've never under stood the complaint that parts cost to much on these cars Im just not seeing it

Just remember paying more does not mean youre getting a better car. Just keep that in mind, doing your own repairs aways helps to make any car more affordable. And like spikepaga said you pay cheap prices on parts you get cheap parts. That holds true on paying more getting more. If you are in the 4-5k range then you need to really look the car over and make a list of needs. Then price parts and labor(your labor is not free) and then get the car dropped accordingly. I like my cars all fixed and looking great with virtually no issues. So i know im going to be replacing and repairing stuff and price you pay should reflect this.

These cars have been on the road for 15 years. And if anything does go wrong, you can just search or ask here. Chances are the issue happened to someone in the past. There are a lot of friendly helpful people willing to chime in on here. This is the best forum out there.

Yes but paying more USUALLY always means lower miles better condition car overall keep that in mind also.......For instance a brand new Water Pump for this car AC Delco costs $36.79 for this car that's amazing to me.

I have purchased cheap x type water pump, hoses and suspension parts. They fail. Go to the Jaguar Forums UK and search "pattern parts" as they call them over there if you don't believe me.

I wouldn't consider AC Delco to be cheap parts or that they have poor quality, best quality parts I have found for lots of cars I have owned.

Here's my bit, owning both a 02 and a 07 I would say the 07 is a lot sounder, runs quiter, same power but firm both fun to drive.
I would go for the lowest miles latest year I can find, use CarFax to check the VIN # for Service records fine out whats been worked on if it has 100K + and everything's been replaced with OEM parts your good, if its under 60K and original your also good at 113K have the spark plugs been replaced, this is not easy or cheap ?
02 might have some rust check under the door sills

Enjoy Chris K Xtype 2002+2007

Imo rock auto sucks for a great variety of parts for jaguars compared to partsgeek .com which sells almost everything for jaguars from oem to cheap aftermarket and in between. I can usually get jaguar oem parts from them less than my cost at work. go figure

I look in Rock Auto parts couple of time they don't carry enough parts, I buy a lots from PartsGeek, they had lots of parts, the price are decent, quick shipping, and I don't have the problem with eBay so far.

You get sick of gearing the "Mondeo" crap all of the time...but the little bit of Mondeo on our cars works to our benefit, since most of the shared parts are the wear parts.

See what part you need, look at it, and get the fomoco part number off of the part.

Usually half the price!

There are a lot more of these cars still on the road in the UK, and I find that it is ofyen far less expensive to buy the parts from over there even with a few extra quid for shipping.

Oh, and I second crawling underneath and carefully checking the rockers! They can be GONE and you can't tell because of the plastic rocker trim...

You are in a snow area, so a 2004-1/2 or earlier would suit you best for the superb traction control the earlier models had.
The car you are shopping, $2000 max if body-interior are great, then spend a grand on suspension, engine gaskets, plugs etc and have a smooth ride.

Well I checked out the vehicle today.......was a no go I should of known better then to believe the craigslist ad when it said Excellent and Mint condition.

Wet gaskets on top on the engine, wet gaskets on bottom of engine just a oily mess.

Paint was far from mint condition.

If anyone is looking to buy a X-Type I highly suggest going on YouTube and looking at Chrisfix how to buy a used car, he actually uses a x-type in the video and shows you things to look at/for.

So the search continues......
