Default Spare / Emergency key.

Spare / Emergency key for UK Cars
( Maybe a similar process for other countries?)

I was relieved that my X type came with two proper keys but one of them had damaged buttons. I bought a fob quite cheaply online from a main dealer, programmed it from the included instructions and relaxed a little.

Later my thoughts triggered to getting an emergency key or even two.
Basic requirements:- 1.Convenience of purchase, programming and use.
2.Minimum cost – obviously. 3. Minimum bulk and weight

I consider the familiar Jaguar key as having three parts/functions.
1. The blade that fits in the door locks and the ignition lock.
2. The fob, the half with the buttons that performs the remote lock/unlock actions.
3. The PATS ( Passive Anti Theft System ) transponder hidden in the blade half of the whole and that allows the engine to start/run.

For the emergency key I do not require the remote functions so I have bought online a couple of non branded simple keys (the blades are the common six cuts in length) with the correct chip in them.
In the UK the chip colour must be Light Blue Not Dark blue or Red.
From what I read it is a ID-4D- 60 Transponder chip.
I paid £8.50 plus cutting. I do not know the normal cost of cutting the key.
Some online sellers will cut the key for you but you need the cutting code (see below). E,g, £17 to supply and cut a key.
From what I read the same key will fit :-
Focus 1998 >, Mondeo 01 >, Transit 00 > and S Type <04.

Once the keys are cut and fully programmed, such keys are easier to carry and have an added advantage if lost of having no remote to help find the car.
In the UK I would guess that any finder would say “It’s a Ford key!”

I had the keys cut so they could then open the door but I am going to try some tests before I programme them to the PATS.
I will report back on what I find..

A further idea, certainly for UK folk.
The keys are known as Tibbe keys.
There is a code for cutting the blade that is usually represented in the form T432312 where the numbers indicates the depth required for each of the cuts required. Six cuts for the X – Type - some Jaguars are eight cuts ( XJS, XJ6 XJ12 X300)
(One of my fobs has a label with the code on stuck on its back)

Any decent locksmith / key cutter can read off the code by just looking at the key. If you do not have that code you can always look online for instructions how to read it.

Having obtained the code then maybe store it on you phone or in an email?

Knowing the T code maybe useful if you lock your keys in the boot (trunk)
If you are a long way from home, in normal hours, you may be able to get a key cut locally or a mobile locksmith should be able to cut a new key.
(It obviously will not start the car but I will experiment to determine when the alarm is set off)
Maybe even consider hiding a spare key somewhere hidden on the outside of your pride and joy.

My wife is much happier carrying a standard key rather than the Jaguar one.
For those who gather facts (In the UK we call then anoraks or worse).
5/8 of an ounce = 17g Simple key weight
1&7/8 of an ounce = 52g Jaguar key
2&7/8 of an ounce = 81g Jaguar key plus the dealers metal/ leather key ring.

Don't be spending money getting them programmed. You should be able to program the PATS, the system is the same as the Mondeo MK3.

Insert the first already programmed key into the ignition and turn to position II
Turn back to 0 and remove the key
Insert the second already programmed key into the ignition and turn to position II
Turn back to 0 and remove the key
Key programming mode is now activated and you have ten seconds to:
Insert the unprogrammed new key into the ignition and turn to position II
Turn back to 0 and remove the key
Allow 10 seconds to pass for the system to exit programming mode.

I used this method on my old mondeo key and now have 3 working keys
