Default sport trim?

Hi, after looking at about 200 x types online, i have seen a few listed as "sport" which have chrome bumper trim, i thought the sport had painted trim?.
Do some sport models come with chrome bumper trim?

A lot of cars i've looked at which were not listed as sport, have a "S" button next to the shifter, is this the sport button?....and do only sport versions have this button?

Also i saw an 02 with a navigation system, also an 03 with nav, did they come with navigation this early?, or were they replaced by the owner?...if they came with it, what model wouold that be?...or was it just an option that not too many cars had, i've only seen a couple.

So far missed out by days and hours on 2 low milage X types...the search is getting hectic, i'll be looking to buy in the next couple of days.

I'm leaning toward silver exterior and black interior 3.0 02-03
ideally blue exterior black interior, but i've only seen that combination once...before i had the cash to buy

The Sports should have body coloured mouldings, bigger alloys (17") probably and a slightly stiffer ride.

Try and go 04 and later if you can.....most ofthe noggles were worked out by then. Please do yourself a favour and check the X type quick FAQ link thread for very useful info

Good luck with the hunt

thanks, but does the sport ALWAYS have the painted moldings, as i said, i have seen vehicles listed as "sport" but with chrome moldings.

wish i could afford 04 or later, but even an 02 cannot be as unreliable as my current landrover...hehe. Things going wrong don't bother me, never had a problem i (or my buddies) couldn't fix.

Just yet another learning curve. I still remember the look of panic after i opened the hood of my 84 XJ6 for the 1st time, in 6 months i knew it all!

I just hope to be using this forum less than i had to use the XJ6 forum

If it is advertised as a SPORT and is stock ( not modified ) it should have body coloured mouldings otherwise its and SE or the owner added the chrome!

that looks nice, but its not the sport.
the sport wont have any chrome trim on it. no chrome grill. and 17" rims, as stated above, that is not a sport.
i like the look of the sport better.

here is a 04 sport

From the looks of it, NOT a '02 Sport. The chrome bumper blades and chrome grill surround should say it all but, in addition
-seat side bolsters are not big enough and seats themselves should be Connolly leather with small perforations
-wood should be gray birdseye maple and there should be no wood door trim
-where is the rear spoiler
-those are not the '02 sport wheels
-dead give away is the chrome around the side windows. On a Sport the trim is black and I don't know of anyone that would have added that.

An '02 Sport should have "53" in the sixth and seventh digit of the serial number. That's the easiest way to check.

It is most likely a non-sport 3.0 that has an "s" button for the rpm shift delay.

PS love your 2nd choice in color combo. Platinum and warm charcoal to be precise.

what a great amount of info, i think people selling these may get confused by the "S" button, i've seen a few "sport" advertised cars with the chrome trim and molding, probably dealers with not enough jaguar knowledge trying to "up" the price, that car is also listed on ebay as a "sport" model.
I had not noticed a rear spoiler on any models i've looked at, but bear in mind i'm overdosing on X types this week....i forgot to bookmark a really nice one with nav at $5500...i'll go and look again tomorrow for a sport with spoiler.
thanks again

I just checked its serial # on the ebay listing and it does have 53 as it's 6th and seventh numbers, does this seem fishy to you?, on its carfax report it was reposessed.

here is the ebay link for the same car.

That's really interesting so, I did some research. I may have to stand corrected. Motorcars Ltd says 6th and 7th digit "53" is for X-type 4 door auto trans and "51" for X-type 4 door manual trans. Unfortunately, I've seen all sorts of autos with 51 in the VIN so that kind of kills their theory, and only ever seen '02 Sports with 53's. I don't know why I think I'm right because it's been a long time but I do think I am, especially in the '02 MY. In the case of your example, nothing on that car says Sport but they are giving a 53 VIN number? I'm confused. The 51 vs 53 might have nothing to do with it but I specifically remember it did back when I researched mine.

Looks like the SE to me being pushed as a SPORT and I think you can do better......shop till you drop and you will find a better example of a true SPORT X type

i like both the sport and non sport version, so my head will be more swayed by milage/price and color combination at this point.

That red sport had no rear spoiler that Mohrd mentioned, was that optional?

Jims right, this is an SE .. all Sport models came with spoiler as standard.

You may want to look at the following link from Parkers

Jaguar X-Type Saloon (01-10) Car Review - Facts & Figures - Parkers

If you scroll down the page then hit the link that reads 'more equipment more figures' it will give you a breakdown of the options you get with each model.

Hope this helps

Here's an update on VINs from Dan @ Nalley. Seems that we are correct about the "53" in the 6th and 7th denoting a Sport trim. 51 is a non-Sport. He also says 5th digit A = auto and B = manual.

I had a look at a few more eBay listings too. Seems they are all over the place. Even saw one with a 53, looked like a Sport, and then their description went on to list all sorts of chrome that wasn't even on the car pictured.
