Suggestions on repainting rear blackout panel?
Hi all, I'm considering repainting the blackout panel that houses the backup sensors because the current paint is flaking off and the paint that remains is stained with paste wax from waxing the car a while back. Anyone have a suggestion on what kind of paint to use?

Have you thought about using Plastidip?

I would sand yours down after scraping old stuff off.

Hi Vincev.
I thought the valance housing the reversing sensors was of black plastic and not painted. However I know there is a special paint for plastic available from the accessory shops (do not know the manufacturer), which I have used before in situations like this. Just sand off the flaking paint and brush on....it did not even leave brush marks.
Hope this helps.

The stuff that is peeling off will peel off in huge swaths with the help of a power washer (car was wand!). Remove the panel, carefully remove the sensors, and go to town on it to get the peeling layer off.
Clean it well with alcohol or paint prep, them hit it with Krylon Satin Black Fusion Spray Paint. It sets up quick, so you can put the sensors back in and remount it on the car.
The actual paint on the thing is a charcoal bumper coat, but they wanted almost $90 a quart for the stuff!
Give a week to ten days for it to fully cure before you wash or coat it.

I second the Krylon Fusion. I used it on plastic chairs for the patio after they got old and kinda chalky looking. That rear panel comes off easily enough.
Make SURE you clean all the wax off or I can pretty much guarantee no matter what paint you use, it won't stick where there's wax. Mineral spirits should take it off and won't damage the plastic. (I do woodworking... wax and silicone are the bane of anyone trying to put a finish on anything)
But the Krylon Fusion , in my opinion, is the way to go.
