Trailer lights
Just installed a hitch for some very light towing. Anyone know of a trailer light kit that I can install on a 2004 X-Type? I would hate to buy from Jag but don't want to break anything.
What you'll need is a modulite protector. The wires going to the rear lights don't have the capacity to handle more amps from trailer lights. The "black" box basically uses the signal from the vehicle lights to then send power from the vehicle battery to the box which then sends that power to the trailer (thus no more drain on the vehicle wiring).
I did mine myself. This is the stuff I got

No real difference between putting this on or any other hard wiring of the system except those are some really small wires you''re soldering with on the car and then of course you need to run a line up to the battery. I ran mine down the underside of the car, in the rocker panel and then up above the rear well, then drilled a hole in the trunk on that side.
I bought a kit for it. Which included the wire to the battery and the needed inline fuse (as close to the battery as you can get). Think it was around $60 or so.
What you'll need is
The modulite
10 or 12 gauge wire
10 amp fuse
soldering stuff and shrink wrap (if you don't want to have issues latter)
grommet for where you go into the trunk (universal pack from an auto store shoud get ya)
test light for figuring out which wire goes where
drill for making that hole
I leave my hook up in the trunk and run it out when I need it The lid shuts just fine and it stays protected that way but you can always mount it under the car to
Took me a good 2-3 hours to put it together but owning an old british car has taught me about being **** with british electrics.
How light is light? I have towed up to 2000lbs but I have a 5 speed. No problems, brakes are okay but not great. If I had an auto I'd put a cooler in if I was planning on towning more than around town and under 1000lbs a couple times a year.
I hope you siliconed the bolt holes good for the hitch. It'll rust in no time if you didn't!
Let me know if you got more questions
