Red face Transfer Case Replacement Help

The dealership quoted me 4000 dollars to replace my transfer case today. Please tell me this is not my only option. Are there any do it yourself steps out there that I could follow or the neighborhood mechanic could do? Lastly where is the best place to purchase a transfer case? I'm in bad shape without my Jag.

I don't think replacing the TC is an easy DIY type of project. Don't expect to see detailed instructions on how to do it on a web site. Your best bet is to get a copy of the X-Type JTIS (technical manual in online format). There's a link at the top of this forum for the older JTIS download (pre-2004 cars).

Note to self: 4000 more reasons to not text and drive

Bummer dude, but seein how i do not know how mechanically inclined you are, i would say myself its not a crazy job but its very do'able. I would first look around for a transfer case and call around different shops in your area to get prices. The transfer case isnt a "dealer" must. If you cant do it, any decent shop could do it no problem.

That bein said i would check car-part.com and of course ebay.com.

And this forum is a very good source for detailed way of doin things, in my opinion, just check the FAQ section on our x-type pages. Unforyunately there isnt one for a transfer case install. But as ive just done an engine swap in my Jag with a Lincoln LS engine, i have had experience with the transfer case. In a nut shel it would involve obviously the removal of the half shafts and drive shaft. Then its held on by 4 bolts. The exhaust may be in your way though. I had the luxury of doin most of it with the engine out.

Just call around dude, you may be surprised.

Good Luck!!!
