Default Vibration and burning smell

i have 2004 x-type manual 2.5, 102,xxx miles

issue i am having is off and on, recently more on......

at approx 65-70 mph i have vibration in the steering wheel and gas pedal. sometimes with this i cannot accelerate and if it finally does it takes a long time.

i was told it was a dragging/stuck caliper and/or master cylinder issue. the rear calipers and master cylinder were replaced about a month ago but the issue was not resolved so i had the front calipers replaced today.

after front calipers were replaced i took on a short test drive. at first there was some vibration but when i turned off vehicle and restarted 5 min later vibration was totally gone and it drove like new.

i just took it on another test drive a few hours later and about 65 mph the vibration started again and by the time i made it home there was a burning smell coming from the front end of the car which you can also smell in the interior. i also notice that when i have the burning smell there is usually vibration also in the gas pedal.

i'm going back to the shop in the a.m. so any insight anyone may have is helpful and much appreciated!

Now this is just a guess, from years of experience, but if your calipers were just replaced, and apparently you have just ruined a front rotor and pads, you probably have an internally collapsed brake hose, not allowing the fluid to return to the master cylinder, not allowing the caliper to open. This would make the brake stay energized, and the brake stay on. This would overheat a disc, and pads, causing the vibration. You could also have the wrong brake fluid in the system, causing it to boil and creating air in the system, causing the same effect as explained above....Hope this helps....Mike

Chased a similar intermittent problem through a BMW braking system about a year ago. Ended up being a faulty booster. Hope you it sorted without great expense.

It may be worth getting it towed in rather than driving it.
