Okay so after reading a previous post by another member discussing warranty work before the end of the warranty-term, it got me thinking. Now, to be honest, I totally forgot about this till last evening when my mother randomly tells me she wants to take the car in to get checked under warranty!...go figure!

I believe it has 53/54k miles and is a 2.5L 2003. She has a day off on Thursday and I'm trying to work my schedule around so that I can go with her in the morning to drop it off and talk it out w/the service manager/dept.

So my questions are as followed (I'll try to keep it brief):

1.) How does it work? You tell them the issues and then they check that out along with their checklist point inspections? Also, how does it work w/warranty work and diagnostic/repair fees/deductibles?

2.) I'm going to give a good close-up at everything sometime this week prior to going, so as daily drivers of this car, what are some common issues/trouble-areas I should draw my attention to (The more the better! Again, I don't drive this car, so I really have no clue as to what to look for; I just maintain it and make it look pretty!). I've already created a small list from the other post, but like I said, more info. is better.

3.) So now, say hypothetically I find some issues that bother me, i.e. an idling issue...how do I go about bring it up w/the service dept? Just mention to the service manager that I felt an idling issue and to check it out? Should I just blatantly present a list with my concerns?

4.) Okay another hypothetical. Let's say they do find something wrong. How will I know if it is a covered or not a covered issue? I know the dealership will tell me outright, but I'd like to do some digging into what's covered and not covered for my own sake. Any options?

I rarely post inquiries on here. I think my last inquiry was regarding a cocked oil filter in which I had to use a screwdriver to pierce the filter in order to take it out! So I'd really appreciate as much info. as you guys could supply me on this one. Even if it's a minor issue you have that you believe no other x-type suffers from, I want to know it and check it out on my own on the car. Thanks.

look at the rocker panels from under the car. they like to rust. it has warrenty for rust.... kind of.

Your factory warrenty was up at 50k but if you haveSelect Edition warrenty its good till 100k or 2 years after your factory warrenty is up. All you have to do is bring your jag to the dealership and tell them your concerns about the car and they will check it out but make sure that you call the dealership first and ask them what could be causing the problem, then ask if it would be covered under Select Edition. If you go to them and its not covered under Select Edition they will charge you a diagnostic fee, labor (if more than 1 hour) and parts. If it is covered under Select Edition you dont pay anything at all.

There are alot of things that Select Edition wont cover but if you get a good service advisor they will work with you and find a way to get it covered.

The corrosion warrenty is a factory warrenty that is good for 6 years and unlimited miles but it only covers major body panels (likefenders, doors, etc)and they have to be rusted almostall the way through it cant just be a little spot of rust.

Thanks for the responses already guys. I'll have to check the rust issue out. Problem is we just had a snow storm here two days ago and car is all nice and salty.

The thing is the car doesn't really have any issues, but she wants to get it checked out as I believe the warranty (select) ends in 5/6 months just as a preventive check.

So in order to get my diagnostic fee waived, there has to be something wrong on the vehicle that is under warranty? I take it then I just have to pay the deductible?

So if there are no issues on the car, all I have to do is pay the diagnostic fee? I have no problem paying a diagnostic fee as long as it's realistic and checked over meticulously rather than doing a PCM OBD scan alone and saying it's fine; which is why I want to go in with her when she takes the car in. What is the diagnostic fee usually run on these things...ballpark?

Well, I'm sure if they find something that's not covered, they'll bring it to our attention rather than fixing it w/o our authorization. I'll be sure to check out all documentation that needs to be signed and let my concern be known w/the service manager about not touching it w/o notifying us first.

Your Select Edition shouldnt be up until sometime in 2009 but you can call the dealership and give them your vin and they'll tell you when its up. Yes to get the diagnostic fee waived whatever is wrong must be covered under Select Edition but watch out because if they find a problem that is covered under SelectEdition and something else thats causing the same problem tht isnt covered, They can charge you a diagnostic fee.

If they find something wrong they will call you and tell you what they found. They will either says its covered under Select and confirm you want it fixed or they will call you with a quote and ask if you want them to fix it.

If you want a vehicle inspection your probably better of taking the car to a certified jaguar specialist instead of the dealer becuase the dealer is going to charge you an arm and a leg to go over the whole vehicle. If you have navigation and the dash computer under your speedometer I can give you the instructions on how to get into the diagnostics menus to check some stuff out yourself.

Hey ancient,
some of the issues with the earlier 02 models as listed below, although as yours is an 03 most of these should have been corrected, but worthwhile as a brief checklist and things to consider for sure.
[ul]Leaking/dripping washer jets
Defective boot latch
Faulty J-gate selector
Vibration issues (Sometimes poor tires/balancing, sometimes a prop-shaft problem)
Faulty drivers door latch / passenger side too
"Squeaky" rear seat
Faulty Thermostats, resulting in "High Engine Temperature" warnings
Weak center arm rest [/ul]

What about the dash vents? Are they popping up or not? Do you have the whine from the transfer case that has been mentioned on numerous occasions? If its not your daily driver try taking it out a few times over the comming days at different times. You'll usually find it happens more frequesntly from start up fpr a few minutes especially when cold.

Lower control arms. Compressor leaking, shocks leaking. Tell them vehicle runs rough.....that will give them carte blanche to look around.

FJT- Should I be just that subtle rather than specifying all my issues? It makes sense if I say something as vague as 'rough' running, they'll have to check everything...but does that mean muy grande diagnostic fee? [&:]

I would suggest major things like Transmission, go in and say that the gears shift strange sometimes, and last week after a long drive 3rd gear felt like i was slipping. (tranny check)

Tell them when you hit a bump that it doesnt sound good and the car feels like it looses track. (suspension check).

you see were i am going.

Now the issue is if you get a good dealer that wants to help you.

you could go to an independent mechanic Pay him like $200 to do a once over and spot thing that will need to be fixed or will go out in a a year or two. just incase the dealer isnt a great one, you will have a second opinon back up and a guideline on what you should say to have the dealer fix it.

My car sometimes has problems figuring out which gear it wants but I don't know if they'd actually fix the car or anything by me saying that, just check the car up and down and see what you can find. Tell your mom to let you take for a few days/week and check everything out like the idle and all that...

Sorry for the lack of update.

Well, she decided she needed a more fuel-friendly car, and traded it straight up for 15 Tata Nanos from Jaguar.

















On a more serious note, I made a boo boo!

So I pm'ed FJT to get some more advice and he goes on to tell me some of the finer lines of 'Select' warranty.
Come Tuesday night I implore her to give me all relevant paperwork from the car, which of course was a nice mixed up glop. I should note that it took 2 hrs just to find paperwork on a car purchased one year ago! And here, I still have my fuel receipts from back in '03!

So Wednesday morning I throw it all in a folder and take it to work with me. Come afternoon, I get a chance to start my reading rainbow adventure. About 20 mins into organizing and reading the paperwork, I see "warrantied till 100k miles or April 2009." Opps!

My justification for the boo boo is it isn't my car and I've been going on the notion of I was told. I was told the car would be out of warranty within a year of the purchase date (back in June '07). So yeah, it's got a whole 'nother year left on it! Bad thing is I stayed up late making a list of relevant issues, good thing it's got another year.

Sorry about that guys! Your efforts have not gone in vain though, as we'll be starting a comprehensive list of issues from now and on, and throw them at Jaguar next year (Hopefully, by next year I'll be in another state so I don't have to deal with this crap, though!)

I honestly can't even believe my eyes!!! I took my X into Jag back in December for a whining sound that happens only below 39 degrees and goes away after 5 minutes of driving for the rest of the day. They charged me a boat load of money for replacing belts and rubber as the service writer automatically thought it was a belt. He never drove the car to hear the noise and of courses each time I brought it to the dealer it would never make the noise as the car would need to sit over night. Finally, they changed the drive shaft to the updated one and the problem is gone and so are my Benji's from the all of the belts and hoses replaced that was not even the problem. F*ckers!.

After reading even further I see that yes, my vents on top of my dash beneath the windsheild are popped up. What does that mean?

My steering wheels shakes and I have this weird vibration in the steering wheel as if the tires are unbalanced but they are not. I just had Jag slap on 18 inch Aruba's with 225/40/18 Kuhmo ASX tires and the problem is still there. After they changed out the driveshaft it lessened a bit but it is still there. What could it possibly be? And the steering wheel does squeek.
