Default What to look for

Hi folks.
I'm from over on the XK8 forum but I'm looking at a 2002 silver X type for my wife. It's got 120 thousand KM on it and has had one minor accident front corner. Paint is good. Interior is excellent. Runs and handles very solid. It's just her size but there is some rot at the front corner of the body in each door well. Dealer says they will have a shop weld in new metal there. I could oil the hell out of it after that.

It's got a 2.5 in it I believe and the bay looks quite clean. Thinking this could be a good car for 3 or 4 yrs. Anything I should be looking for similar to the tensioner problems we have on the 8's.

Thanks for your time.

OK, upon some further reading I see a transfer case flush is a must. same as the trannies on the 8's. Sealed for the life of the warranty. BTW, I do most of the work on my XK8 and have a great Indi shop for anything I can't figure out.

RJag, the big thing is the transfer case. If you get one without a gear whine, then you should be good. One note on the 2.5L motor, if you are wanting something that is peppy, then that is not the motor. Even the 3.0L motor is adequate, but for what most think of as a Jag, you may be a little disappointed. Great cruiser, but not much if you are looking to get up and go from a stop. Not to mention that the quick accelerations are what kill the transfer case.

After that, most of the problems with the car are fairly simple to fix. Pick it up if you can get it for a steal.

Hi, RJag, good luck with the purchase.
I hope you post pictures.

I'm 20 minutes north of you in Orillia, and just picked up an X Type at Barrie Lexus.

I don't have PM privileges yet ... could you possibly share with me the name of your Jag specialist down in Barrie?

Thanks in advance,
Ted.

I'm pleased to . He's Ted Shier. He and his lead mechanic are extreemly knowledgable, honest and helpful. I'd also send my Mother there with her car and never have to question her bill. I've been with him for years.

Re the X type, it's for my wife. after she drove it she thought it was plenty peppy for her style. After what you folks have stated, I would expect the lower powered engine to have left the drivetrain in good shape.

Good luck on your purchase. The x type has been a solid car with good enough performance for me and it is very comfortable

Well folks, we had to pass on this one. The snags would cover two typed pages and while she looks good on the outside, there are more leaks, corrosion and rust than could ever be repaired. I caught a bit of it but my indi, Ted Shier was clear that I don't need this car. Too bad, my wife really likes the X type.

Thanks to all for your input.

RJag, there are more X-Types out there. Keep looking. You will find more. Who knows, maybe you will find a nicer one at a lower cost. It is better to have found the lemon before you cut the lemon to make lemonade. Lemonade is never good when you get the rotten lemon.

Rust is extremely bad, and a constant worry with a car. Pretty much the main reason I went all the way from Finland to southern France was because the owner told me that the bottom of the car is extremely clean. The conditions there are nowhere near as harsh as in Finland, and indeed, every repairman & anti-corrosion treatment professional over here have commented on it being like a new car. Only the mufflers and a few of the thicker beams/axles have surface rust (and these are considered irrelevant by professionals as the beams are too thick to rust badly enough before the rest of the car has ground to dust, and mufflers can be swapped).

Well...that, low mileage & the affordable price. And importantly, the owner was a wealthy and stylish guy with two Audis (TT & R8), so he seemed to be even less likely to try cheat someone for a bit of money with a used car.
