Default What is this part?

Hello, I am new on this goruf and on the DIY... I took my 2002 X-type for a degrease engine job and have noticed a small oil leak from here (picture)... what is the name of the part? I assume that I need to replace it or is there something else going on (e.g. execce oil)?

That would be the camshaft sensor. if it is leaking oil, then odds are you simply need to remove the valve cover and put on a set of new seals. There should be a rubber "o-ring" on it that forms a seal. That is going to be a lot easier and cheaper than buying a new sensor since you should have a new seal set when you replace the sensor any ways.

jgonzalez: I presume the oil leak is very minimal, since there's no oil pressure inside the valve cover, and oil must flow uphill to leak out at that point. Thermo's right - the permanent solution is replacing the rubber seal around the camshaft position sensor, which involves removing the valve cover. As an interim fix, without having to remove the valve cover, you could try a dab of RTV Silicone on the rubber seal where the oil is seeping out.

Mmm! Slip of the memory there I think Thermo! It's the left hand Variable Camshaft Timing Control Solenoid Another one on the right hand bank.

The leakage rate at this v low pressure position is so little, it questions the worth of removing the cambox to do the job. A weekly wipe works wonders!!

Astromag, you are correct. had to look to check myself. Either way, the solution is the same, pull the valve cover and replace the rubber seal around the solenoid.

At my age I'm lucky if it's weekly.
