I have a 2002 x-type 3.0 V6 and got a MIL P0171 and P01764 (system too lean) ODB-II codes.

As suggested from some of the other threads I started with the obvious to looking for vacuum leaks. Immediately after starting my car I started hearing a hissing sound. I found a crack on the hose 1 but not sure if the noise was really coming from the hose 2 above

What hoses are these? which one is connected to the PCV valve? Thanks

The #1 hose is your oil vapor hose and it is known for causing various vacuum leaks. The #2 hose I don't recall what it goes to off the top of my head. I would need to run out to my car and trace it down.

Based on the picture, you have the old style hose for the oil vapor hose. Spend the $15 and get a new hose. Jaguar has redesigned that hose due to numerous failures (tends to split on the under side of the hose, where you can't see it unless you remove it).

Just to update, I replaced the PCV hose and the hissing noise went away, cleared the engine lights (P0171 and P0174) drove it for awhile, no engine lights came back, car drives smooth, no hesitation and various speeds as before.

I learned that hose #2 is called a breather hose, and has a couple slits in it to 'breathe' so it wasn't damaged as I originally thought. The new pcv hose part C2S40863 has a waffle texture with clamps, much more sturdy than the original smooth pcv hose that came with the car.

One thing, I wanted to also replace my PCV valve (since I bought it even though I didn't need it to resolve my issue), but anyone familiar with removing it? It seems really stuck, I noticed it has two d-tents locking it in place, do I pry it open and go counter-clockwise? Any tools I should use please advise!
