Default x type diesel estate update in U.K.

Hi there,
I had bought a X type diesel 2.2 facelift estate (sportswagon) last autumn/ Fall which had a known problem. But I got it very cheap. Other than the fault, it was in good physical condition. A 2008 model with 127K miles on it. But it was in limp mode. Update is - up and working nicely now! OK, it cost quite a bit - but less than the dealers as I have a decent local garage in town. Note that at around 100K miles, the Ford diesel engines which are high pressure operating will have worn out the injectors, and the diesel fuel pump will be coming to the end of its life too. Both those needed changing in this vehicle. But, I paid a fifth of the price of most that are up for sale secondhand, so roughly the money I saved on purchase was spent replacing the pump, solenoid valve, 4 injectors, as well as the starter motor - and the fuel tank was drained and cleaned, oil and all filters changed and a service done. But now I have a car that can likely do another 100K before I need worry about those items. The moral to the story for me is - I might have had to spend what I did even on the other pricier secondhand X types that were available, which would have added significantly to my costs. I shall let folks know how we do with this for our long treks to Switzerland and then Spain from the UK - once covid allows.... So, a Happy New Year to one and all! Alex.

Well done! And I know from experience that the beautiful Sportwagon is a very satisfying car (but mine is the 3.0 V6).

My other car is a S Type saloon, 2002/3 model and that is a 3.0 V6 petrol, and is lovely to drive. That one is for local journeys, and the diesel X type sportswagon is for the long holiday treks where fuel consumption is more critical. I love both of them though!

Sadly, their return isn't looking any closer yet. From two Continental trips a year for more than thirty years, it's now 27 months since I last emerged from Eurotunnel.

It is a worry looking at the problems - especially with France. Apparently there is a new law in France saying non EU drivers are not allowed to drive on French roads!
My Swiss trek in the autumn may well have to start from Belgium or Holland at that rate.... and a loss for the French tourism as we'd not stay overnight anywhere, nor do any shopping en route as we usually do. And that assumes covid doesn't take another twist, of course.... At least the X type is ready and raring to go!
