Default x type engine code p0430

Shortly after buying my 2003 x type 2.5 the engine malfunction light came on. The local mechanic says the diagnostic code that comes up is P 0430 which I was told is a bad catalytic converter. At first they said they thought the code was for a bad oxygen sensor. When I tried to get the car inspected it failed because the OBD was not ready. I have seen a thread about bad cats and I am hoping someone can tell me for sure if this code means a bad cat converter.
thanks
Howard

Howard, the code indicates that the cat is seen as not being efficient enough. This can be the result of either your cat not working like it should (ie, coated with foreign material) or one of your O2 sensors is not reading as it should (coated with something or simply failing, but not to the point that it is triggering the O2 sensor failure). If you have a scanner that you can get real time data from, that will tell you whether your cat or the sensor is bad. If not, you can either buy a scanner or you will need to stop by a shop that can read the data and then tell you what is going on.

Howard - click on attached code description below.

Thermo is right on his assessment - Bank 2 cat is seen as not performing optimally.

Hopefully you just have a bad oxygen sensor(s).

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much. When the shop first checked the codes they said they thought it was the O2 sensor then they had their head mechanic check and he thought it was the cat. I need to find a good Jag mechanic in Northern new jersey. I really appreciate your quick response. thanks again.

Thanks. This is very helpful. Hopefully it is just the oxygen sensor. The weird thing is the engine malfunction light is now out. But I need to figure this out so the car can pass inspection

I have a P0420 - which is the same exact problem BUT on the firewall side ... which means it's even more of a PIA

Hope it's just the O2 sensor for you too. g/l

Is there any way that someone could have unplugged the O2 sensor at the connectors and inadvertently plugged the grey one where the black one should be and the black one where the grey one should be, or will they only fit in a each particular spot ?

Not sure about switched wires but I have not looked under the hood very much yet as I just got the car a couple of weeks ago.

Wa3ra had a possible solution on a recent similar thread. He recommends checking the fuses for the 02 sensors to make sure they are not blown. He had a similar problem and simply replaced a blown fuse to resolve the issue.

It may not be your problem, but worth checking and easy to do. (see attached)
