I have a 2005, X TYPE 2.0 SE Automatic which I have owned for just over 2 years.

The engine has developed a very loud clonking sound in the bottom end. The car still starts and runs normally, there is no smoke, no water from the exhaust or other problems.

The temp gauge is normal, oil pressure is fine and no engine management light is showing.

I have been told by a local garage, who only listened without examination, that the big ends have gone and the only remedy is a new engine.

Is this the case ?

Is there any way that the bottom half could be rebuilt or would that not be cost effective.

I have been quoted about £1100 for a second hand, recon engine, £1000 labour and about £500 for oil, filters and other bits and pieces.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I've spun the bearings on an engine and it sounds like a hard knock in the bottom end, usually happens if moisture gets in the oil pan, then gets under the bearings.

It seems like a lot of money in pounds, here in Canada you can convert that to dollars to get an equivalent cost. Seems high but likely your about right on with costs.

 

I'm replacing the rod bearings in my car now. The bearings didn't spin, just worn out. I will let you know how this turns out......

 

Well, I just completed the bottom end with bearings (large end.) The bearings were just about worn out. The new bearings went in fine. I couldn't find Jag bearings that would fit. They ended up being bearings from a Ford Contour. The knock that I had at the start of this adventure is still there though. It only knocks at idle, when the car is reved up, the knock goes away. The knock is heavy enough that it sounds like a rod bearing, but it is something else. Now I either have to start on the top end of the engine, or just drop another engine in the car.

Anyone have any insight on what to look for with this blasted engine??????? It is a hard knock, but only at idle. I do have some lifter noise too. I guess it will be a valve job. Damn, why didn't I get the beemer......

 

Sorry I'll be of no help in this - I'm unfamiliar with the 2.0's. Is that a diesel or petrol engine? Is it related to the UK duratec (called the zetec on the other side of the pond)?
